She probably can't sing it at all, but comparing the comedy in the book to her television persona, Wendy Williams could milk some real laughs out of this thing.

*you and me
since you guys are both being petty
I wonder if someone like Kristin Wiig could pull off the role. She's closer to the age and comedic style that Channing was known for when she did the part originally.
Ana Gasteyer could probably do this in her sleep, but I also think Goldie Hawn would be a hoot too!
But like, Donna Murphy is the alternate which makes me believe she has first dibs on replacing.
Bernadette Peters
Patti Lupone
Tonya Pinkins
Lillias White
Carolee Carmello
Marin Mazzie
Stephanie J Block
Vanessa Williams
I would love to see Mandy Patinkin, Chuck Cooper, or Boyd Gaines step into the role of Horace.

Nathan Lane or RuPaul as Dolly could be interesting...
Are we just going to keep naming every famous woman over 40 who can sing?

The original sort of set that precedent. Doesn't hurt to speculate/wish. Who would you want to see?

I don't know if this was aimed at me, but I named several Broadway actresses that could step into the role. It's not like I named J-Lo or Madonna.

ITS, not IT'S.
How many times do people have to be reminded of the basics of freaking grammar???
What an arrogant ahole !
There are people from many walks of life who make up this board, all united by their love of theatre.
A mistake in English grammar does not make a person love theatre less or put them in a different 'class' to your own.
Please continue to correct all our 'freaking' mistakes if that is your mission in life.
Fran Drescher---how was she in Cinderella?
Could she sing and dance Dolly?
That voice is a cross between Channing and Fierstein.
The world has probably forgotten The Nanny by now.

Not if she can't sell enough tickets...
It's not the front seat of the car, nobody gets dibs.

I think that's spelling, not grammar. Also, this is an informal message board, not an English class.

Scrolling down. "
What if this keeps coming up to the top? This damn subject line is like an eye floater.
In a place full of opinions, there's nothing wrong with following a rule. Not even all the rules. Just a rule.
What about Alison Janney? I can't think of anyone more ideal than her.
I second Andrea Martin. Or hey, why not barbra?

I know Andrea has spoken about how she loved playing Dolly in The Matchmaker.
If you're going to correct people online, please do not confuse "grammar" with punctuation."
They are not the same thing.
But, really, correcting people's grammar (or punctuation) online is as ruse as correcting someone's grammar in conversation.
It's just rude.
Latifah saw the show this weekend. Now there is a idea! But I wouldn't be surprised if what they do in January is close it for the winter and re open it in April again with Bette. Kind of what Helen Mirren did.

Since we're throwing names out here, how about Dollypop? He's been itching to play the part for 53 years. He knows it backwards and forwards and brings his own costumes.
