The last revival's paring down of the orchestrations as well as the direction did not do this brilliant show justice and this could.

Ebersole is too old for the role.
I believe Benanti's names was tossed around for the last revival, too bad it didn't pan out, she'd be excellent.

Ebersole has already played Desiree in concert. I love her performance in 'Grey Gardens' but don't think it was particularly revolutionary here.
I'd like Marin Mazzie. Bit of a waste of her voice, but she's funny.

I think that this score is so decadent and really deserves to be performed with a large orchestra.

if a Broadway revival had been done ten years sooner than it was, Laura Benanti would have been inspiring as Anne.

Benanti played Anne 12 years ago. Concert or not, she is 100% a Charlotte now.

If we're talking a quick weekend run sort of thing (like Sweeney was) they could absolutely get a big name for Desiree and probably Madame Armfeldt. Kate Winslet (who I believe was a candidate for the last revival) would be an excellent choice.

I'd rather a Charlotte with less voice. I don't like it when that part is over-sung. There's no denying that the role is a good fit for Benanti, but I'd rather someone with less of a terrific singing voice.
Kate Winslet would be terrific. I think she could pull off the high comedy with grace and wit.

Ashford is undeniably talented, but she's at least 10 years too young for Charlotte and wouldn't really fit the role regardless. She would probably make a fine Petra, but I'd prefer a more grounded performer. Lindsay Mendez would be excellent, and would knock her song out of the park.

Mendez is INSPIRED for Petra. How has she not performed that song before?
EDIT: Ashford is too young, but I do think she fits the role, especially if you've seen her acting outside of theatre in Masters of Sex. I'd love her to do a more grounded role on stage at some point soon, because most aren't familiar with her dramatic acting talents.

She definitely doesn't the fit the role, but Erin Davie was only 32/33 when she played in the revival, although practically all of the roles were refreshingly cast younger in that production. Ashford will be 31 in June.

If it happened it wouldn't be the first time two actresses who are mother and daughter in real life played Desiree and Madame Armfeldt onstage together, Natasha Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave also played the roles onstage before Natasha's untimely death.
