Lord Brantley did not like it so to the producers already were trying to arrange deck chairs on the Titanic.
Be honest. If Idina was not in it, what would the prospects for this show be? Would it have been doing blockbuster business during previews? I do not get the whole building up her as the second coming of the Messiah. She is a talented actress & singer. Stop measuring her for her name on the Gershwin theater wall until she does a few more shows.
Barbara Harris was thought to be the rising star. As quickly as she rose she fell into obscurity. Fame is a fickle thing.
OK, so this is just some rectally-derived correlation, as I originally thought. Got it.
I'm pretty sure no one is denying that Idina is the main selling point of the show.

So, in a thread questioning the popularity of If/Then, I'm being asked to imagine a different reality and how the world might be different if that had happened?! Am I being punked?
Exactly. Without her, would this show have even got produced? Would the producers be contemplating closing the show after the reviews came out? When she goes on vacation will the show go on hiatus?
It is a bad thing when you bring in a show totally dependent on 1 star selling it. If the rest of the show does not work, why do people think it will because of her no matter how talented she is.
If a show had been trying out in the 60's and 70's, it would have either closed on the road or the producers may have already posted a closing notice.
Friends of ours who saw it said it seemed to be a contest who could sing the loudest. In addition, the score did nothing for them. They agreed the she was the main reason to see it. What happens after the advance dries up and word of mouth sets in. I wish every show good luck .
"Would the producers be contemplating closing the show after the reviews came out? When she goes on vacation will the show go on hiatus? "
Dude, seriously? The fact that you even consider that to be a possibility is ludicrous. NO ONE is considering closing this show at the moment. Have you seen the box office receipts? The show has been doing fantastic financially speaking and it got a fair number of good reviews.
I have plenty of friends who have seen the show and thought it was wonderful. THAT'S HOW IT WORKS. Some people love it, some people don't. Please don't try and speak for the entire theatre community.

Add me to the list of IF/THEN lovers. I really liked it. Idina was great, but so was the rest of the cast. I'm looking forward to the OBCR!
The same thing happened for Once. Shows that divide the audience don't necessarily disappear, they just hopefully attract more of the people who will love the show.
I never said they were closing. All I said is that when the advance dries up, there may be a problem. You have to admit with the reviews it got people will not be lining up to buy tickets. I am not even saying the show is good or bad as I have not seen it. I hope it succeeds despite the critics. The public will decide as they do with every show.
I am not trying to speak for the entire theater community. I am one voice - no more and no less. I suggest you take the same approach. Time will tell what happens. I wish them well.
Fair enough. Indeed, we'll just have to wait and see. I too am hoping for the best.
You never said they were closing, only that they were on the Titanic, heh.
The Pre-Orders for the cast recording are number 3 on Amazon. Aladdin is number 9.
"After the reviews, lucky it is recorded at all."
"Bonny and Clyde" was recorded and "If/Then" will play a lot longer and got better reviews.
"I am not even saying the show is good or bad as I have not seen it."
For someone who hasn't seen the show, you seem to be commenting on every aspect of it.
"After the reviews, lucky it is recorded at all."
I don't think reviews have much to do with a recording.
Why would the artwork on the cover of the cast album change? It's the artwork on the Playbill, window card, theatre, every ad, etc.

Yes, it would have. Because Kitt and Yorkey won the Pulitzer, in case you forgot that.
Also David Stone is obviously a fan and supporter of the show. And he has the money to back it up.
I should know free speech does not exist on BWW. I was just commenting. I did not hack people to death with an ax. Many people comment on a show without seeing in based upon a bias they have for a performer .How many reviewers review a show while not even seeing it, or sending a subordinate or just hating people involved with the production.
I will make sure I will remind you if you comment on a show if you have not seen it. No need to get your panties in a knot over this. Their are bigger problems we all face. Broadway is at the bottom of the list.
I don't know if it would have but who cares? The show has Idina and is doing great at the box office and that's all that matters at the moment. It's far too early to judge whether the reviews have killed the show (they probably can't help) and to even suggest that the cast recording would be cancelled is ridiculous lol.
It was just an observation, relax. I would never comment on a show I haven't seen. I would ask questions about them, though.
Yes, there are much more serious problems to face. Such as all the horrendously, non-funny April Fools threads on here today.

Shows have seen success with a lot worse reviews than this one. Not to mention the fact that shows with glowing reviews have floundered.
Using this season as an example, Brantley's seal of approval or diss can sometimes have the opposite effect-- eg. Bridges vs. If/Then
"How many reviewers review a show while not even seeing it"
If you're talking about actual reviewers in the media, I'd have to go with... none?
I should know free speech does not exist on BWW.
The mods banned you for posting your opinion?!?! Oh wait...no, they didn't. You're a victim of...people responding to your posts...which included a lot of questions.
No need to get your panties in a knot over this. Their are bigger problems we all face. Broadway is at the bottom of the list.
The only knotted knickers seem to be yours. Nobody else is getting so dramatic about it at all. If Broadway is at the bottom of the list of "problems we all face", why would you react as though you are being persecuted so heinously (which you weren't at all).
Regardless, you don't necessarily need Idina Menzel or a Tony/Pulitzer winning duo to get a new musical produced (The Story of My Life, Glory Days, Next to Normal, Lysistrata Jones), but you may want to secure a name with a stable fan base to generate ticket sales like, you know, most musicals. And so what if the show gets mixed reviews but has a star to keep it open? I don't remember all this kvetching about Boy From Oz. Or Funny Girl, for that matter.
Why would the artwork on the cover of the cast album change?
It's rare, but it happens. The Light in the Piazza had completely different artwork than that used for the marketing and promotion of the show.
At any rate, despite what bryan says, it is rare that a new Broadway musical (not transfers or revivals with existing recordings) does not get a cast recording. I don't know what leads people to question it so often.
A little disappointed that it is only 1 disc. I don't have a hard copy of the Next to Normal recording, is it two discs? It just seems like there is a lot of music that isn't going to make the cut on a single disc recording.
Really wish Sh-K-Boom had picked this one up...
Is the one disc thing confirmed anywhere except Amazon (which notoriously has bad information until closer to the release)? I don't see it anywhere on the Masterworks site...
Some are acting like it got completely slammed by all the reviews. In general, it did better than ROCKY in terms of critical response. There was a lot of praise, some negatives, but a lot of mixed reviews.
At this point, yes...it is doing strong business due to Idina. However, who can say how it will do after the droves of fans see it? It might stay strong afterwards, or it might bomb. Honestly, I'm hoping it does well. Its a show that took a very large risk, and I think it will do well with its demographic.
