Angels Arise - Dance of the Vampires. The demo version is amazing. It really lost its point in the stage-show. Also Braver Than we Are: which could be on Bat Out of Hell 3

re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

Two Sondheaim songs that are definitely underrated are
"I Wish I Could Forget You" and
"Loving You" , both from PASSION. They are not only two of the most beautiful songs he's ever written, they are both heartbreaking.

Another beautiful, beautiful song I recently fell in love with is from an little off-broadway musical called "Birds Of Paradise", and the song is called "Imagining You". It is simply wonderful.
"Years from now, when you talk about this - And you will - Be kind. "

Christiane Noll does a beautiful version of "Who Are You Now?"

Bernadette Peters' "Nothing Like You've Ever Known" from Song and Dance.

Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner's RAGS duet, "If We Never Meet Again", and Sideshow's "Who Will Love Me as I Am?"

Camelot's "I Loved You Once in Silence".

"A Quiet Thing" from Flora the Red Menace.

I could go on and aon...

re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

I'm partial to "With You" from Pippin, "To Each His Dulcinea" from Man of La Mancha, and "I Remember" from Merrily We Roll Along. Those come immediately to mind, in addition to a lot of the ones already mentioned.
"And the postman sighed as he scratched his head, you really rather thought she ought to be dead..."

Oh! Yes! "City of Angels" is chock full of totally wonderful, overlooked songs - nobody I ever speak to seems to know the show except my close buddies, but the, maybe I need to widen that circle re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

Some (!) of my other nominees here... "Disneyland" /Smile; "Where's the Girl"/Scarlet Pimpernel; "A Change in Me"/Beauty & the Beast; "I'll Forget You"/Scarlet Pimpernel; and from Barnum, "Colors of my Life" and "I Like Your Style" (which was the first dance at our wedding, I kid you not!)

re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

Other than the ones that've been mentioned, "Take Me to the World," and "I Remember" from Evening Primrose are incredible, beautiful, understated, and underrated (in my opinion). I've always felt "Kiss Me" from Sweeney Todd was underrated too, but then again: it's also from a Sondheim masterpiece, so maybe it doesn't count.

SorryGrateful- I wholeheartly agree with you with that song. My ex-boyfriend broke up with me and my party shuffle played that song the day after. I was bawling.

I Never Knew his Name- The Civil War
Nothing Really Happened- Is there life after high school?
certainly not underrated but "You've got to be carefully taught" from South Pacific because I love Rodgers & Hammerstein and people seem to forget about them a lot in recent times, that song brings me to tears.

re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

First, I think Your Daddy's Son is neither underrated, nor understated.
Everyone loves the song, and... "I BURRIED YOU IN THE GROUND!" isn't too understated.
But it is gorgeous.

I second "Father to Son" from March of the Falsettoes.
Monica and Mark from Elegies.. "Everthing Thanksgiving, Mark had his all male thanksgivings dinner. Where men made the turkey, and men made the cranber --- da da da, etc."

Makes me cry everytime.

I Remember from Evening Primrose
Like It Was from Merrily
Hero and Leander from Myths and Hymns
Love to Me from Piazza... so simple. So gorgeous. So heartfeldt.
Of course, Anyone Can Whistle.. but I don't think it's underrated anymore.
No More, Into the Woods.

So many Sondheim pieces.. I'll quit here.
Personally, I think I have too much bloom.
