Anything from Passion. I especially love when Marin sings "To feel a woman's touch" in the Garden Sequence...so hauntingly gorgeous!

Also, "I Have Dreamed" from The King and I.

Once Upon a dream - Jekyll & Hyde
One More Kiss - Follies

re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

there are a couple of songs I can't listen to without having tears in my eyes (even if I listen to them outdoors)
Where's the girl? - The scarlet pimpernel
Love sneaks in - DRS
The next ten minutes - L5Y
Don't cry out loud - The boy from oz
etc.
Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."

I'm Not That Girl- Wicked
I Know The Truth- Aida
I'll Cover You(Reprise)-RENT
Maybe I Like It This Way- The Wild Party(Lippa)
Hushaby Mountain- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Pillowpants. 'Nuff said.

I don't think anything from Wicked is underrated.
And definately not Rent.

Maybe I Like it this Way is not understated, at least for that inane nonsense in the middle, mistaken for text, and then the lyrics following:

Maybe tomorrow, it comes crashing down.
Maybe next week, I'll find another clown.

I can't help but laugh everytime I hear that.
I can see why you think it's pretty, though.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

Our time- Merrily we roll along
I hate the bus- C,oC
The music and the mirror- ACL
Finale- Passion
A new life- J&H

Although Sondheim, passion and merrily both are quite underrated and caroline isnt too popular either along with jekyll. And chorus line is very popular too, but I never hear anyone mention what is arguably the most amazing song in the show

If We Only Have Love-Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.

I know it's cheesy, but the sentimental side of me gets all choked up when I hear it.
"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad

Most of Taboo and "Soon it's Gonna Rain" from The Fantasticks. I love that song. It's so simple, but so lovely.
I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.

I didn't post "Will I" because I felt it was underrated, just beautiful :) And I don't see much about it when people discuss songs from Rent :)

That's not inane nonsense. It makes PERFECT sense in the context of the show since it has been established that Burrs is a clown.

As for the topic at hand, I'm gonna have to say "Small Umbrella In The Rain" from Little Women. I'm in love with it. I find it to be so true to life, so simple, so beautiful, and wonderfully performed.

I agree with those of you who said "I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked.

I'm waiting for a country female artist to discover this song and make it a hit. It easily could be.

Faith Hill (and others), are you listening?
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."

underrated i understand but understated...i wonder if such songs are written anymore. a beautiful song without big notes for the sake of big notes. something simple, purposeful where the melody supports the intentions of the words. BUILD MY HOUSE from Peter Pan. for a contemporary song, i think BACK TO BEFORE from ragtime is beautifully constructed and simple- a waltz with occasional syncopation -- lovingly paced.

Mind is Mantra.

re: Incredible Beautiful, Understated and Underrated Songs

Yes, the lyrics make sense, but it totally takes you out of the song, the show, that world.

It does to me, at least.
I can't stand bad lyric writing.
I'm sure there was a better way to say "I should leave this man" than rhyme down and clown.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

Prima Donna - POTO.
Yes, the show is a big fat hit, but whenever the show or its songs are mentioned this song never comes up! It is a beautiful waltz, with brilliant overlapping vocals which cleverly create somewhat a conversation between the characters. With all the counterpoint and overlapping singing the song is difficult to follow at first, but once you 'get the hang of it' it is brilliant.

Unsuspecting Hearts - CARRIE Such a beautiful duet!

I completely agree about Build My House from Peter Pan, Garland Grrrl! That song is so perfectly written, but what else can you expect from Bernstein? So good...
