"They never use big stars. Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Anne Hathaway, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, Natlaie Portman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, Kevin Spacey Morgan Freeman and Michelle Pfieiffer are a bunch of no-names"
And not one of those names has ever completed a "sold-out" run at Shakespeare in the Park. Even the starry Seagull with half the names mentioned above had seats available most nights.

TWELFTH NIGHT had people camping out for 12-24 hours by the end of its run. THE MERCHANT OF VENICE was pretty much the same--practically untouchable.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

Goth, I'm not quite sure what you are getting at here: first you mention that they never star cast the shows at the Delacorte which is just not true. Routinely, productions in the Park have featured some of the biggest names in the business.
And in terms of being 'sold out,' that is always dependent on a ton of factors: rain, cancellations, etc. Perhaps there were a few seats that were empty at a few performances of THE SEAGULL and MERCHANT IN VENICE, but for the most part, those shows were very very hot tickets with long cancellation lines.
To insinuate that these stars don't create interest above and beyond the productions themselves just isn't true.
As Kad and others have mentioned this is the 50th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park and I expect the Public is going to go all out in their casting for both their productions and I expect a lot of big names to participate.

Of course there are seats available most nights. No one expects otherwise. It wouldn't be Shakespeare in the Park if there weren't same day seats available.

Since we're suggesting Jane Krakowski as the Witch, would it be too far off to also suggest Tina Fey as the Baker's Wife?

I think Martha Plimpton as the Baker's Wife is excellent. There needs to be something mousy about the Baker's Wife. If she's too beautiful an actress, the point of the character is lost.
And since I'm on a Naya Rivera kick, I'm nominating her for the Witch (although she may be a bit too young).

I do love the idea of Plimpton as the Baker's Wife. And Tina Fey would be fun too if she could sing it.
I still think they'll go after a pretty big star for the Witch. When the Public goes after a 'name' they usually mean movie star - Streep, Glenn Close, Gwenyth Paltrow, eta Jones, Cate Blanchett- those types of names.

Is Kristen Stewart too young for The Bakers Wife?

I love the idea of Martha Plimpton as the Baker's Wife, too! Even if she can't hit all the notes, she's such a great choice for the part. I think she'd bring a lot to the production.

If there's ever a revival of Assassins (or a movie version, but I doubt that) I'd love to see Martha Plimpton as Sarah Jane Moore. I think she would be hilarious with the sequence "I have this really great gun, sh*t where is it?"

For the 2007 Signature Theatre production, Angela Lansbury recorded the vocie of the Giant. I could easily see the same here.

They may just keep the Judi Dench recording as they did in the London production.

I was wondering if they might try for someone new, as Judi Dench provided the voice for the 2002 revival.

Since it's a recording and they could pretty much get anybody, I'd go for Streep and see if she'd do the Giant's Wife voice.

Judi Dench recorded the Giant's voice for the London revival in 2010... Again please? I'd love to hear that. I'm in full support of Sara Ramirez as The Witch and think that she could definitely be enough of a name for the Delacorte. Susan Blackwell for the Baker's Wife. Period. The end.

Don't forget, there will also be an actual Shakespeare production this summer, too. The Public will undoubtedly want that to be starry, as well (for the record, I've heard it will be As You Like It, which is actually a nice companion piece to ITW).

Can we start star-casting AS YOU LIKE IT?
Meryl as Jaques (I'm dead serious)
Amy Adams as Rosalind

I think that A Midsummer Nights Dream would be a more fitting companion piece.

Classic Stage is already doing the 'starry' Midsummer this season with Bebe Neuwirth, Christina Ricci et all.

Midsummer was more slightly recently done in the park, however- 2007. As You Like It was done in 2003, making it marginally more timely.

Kad when you mentioned Streep might be doing the Shakespearean show, I kind of assumed it would be as Lady M - especially as its a show they did the first season of the Delacorte....
