There have been so many cancellations of first previews in London recently, off the top of my head I was cancelled on the first preview for next to normal at the Donmar, old friends, here we are and now Into the woods.
This feels like a bit excessive. I know sometimes first previews are cancelled in New York too but I don't remember it being this bad.

Intermission of first preview: it’s an incredibly beautifully staged and performed production.
It makes the Terry G production a couple years ago seem like an amateur affair in comparison, and I imagine will become the gold standard of physical production for this show. It is a bit cringe to think of that recent encores staging in comparison, although aurally it’s very hard to compete with that cast.
Feels more like a true ensemble effort than individual standout performances but there is something a little special about the Witch, Jack, the chemistry between Baker’s Wife and Baker also very strong. Cinderella well sung but could do with a tiny bit more vulnerability though it’s half a first performance lol.
Feels like it’s been a while since we’ve had a first class commercial Sondheim in London (besides Here We Are) and this is the real deal! Wow!
I would try to avoid looking at photos of it just so it’s more special to see it the first time.
Thanks, binau! I'm in the UK next week for work and have one night in London (Wednesday) and I'm seeing this. Cannot wait.

Short Insta video of audience reactions to the woods being revealed. No shots of stage so spoiler-free.
The way they reveal the staging is interesting. It opens with an extremely dry colourless staging - I thought god either this is going to be dry slog or we’re about to get something super abstract and weird but then the world opens into something more normal and magical, kind of like the way the mansion is revealed in fun home (at least in the proscenium staging of it off west end).
Given the director worked with Daniel Fish I was expecting weird abstract production but they didn’t go down that route. Though you can see maybe hints of influence such as when the wolf is slain and blood.
Second act: very strong acting from Baker and Baker’s Wife. Gorgeous singing from Cinderella ‘no one is alone’.
‘Last midnight’ was performed with some offstage voices (rapunzel?) towards the end to create a kind of creepy effect and maybe add a bit of vocal enhancement (like young Anton in The Visit but not quite as obvious). Has this been done before? I don’t remember.
It won’t go down in history as the best sung overall (though there are moments between Baker’s Wife, Jack and Cinderella that are very well sung with interesting timbre), but overall it is very well acted, designed and staged. It’s compulsory viewing for a London theatre trip really.
Thanks for sharing that. I’m prepared for Jamie to just destroy me with “No More”.

He's been one of my favorite actors since The History Boys.
