In going over my Tony picks again, I came across the pattern that this is Judith Light's third consecutive nomination in the same category. If not a record, this has to at least be an anomaly...
Help me here!

I thought it was a tie but got thrown by three Ivey (two Judith and one Dana) noms in a row.

It's Light's record for consecutive noms and I think she'll be 2 for 3.

#4Is Judith Light breaking a record?
Posted: 5/23/13 at 3:44pmI'm not talking in terms of overall noms...but consecutive ones. I can't think of any other actress who got as many nominations IN A ROW (regardless of wins)

I've only looked at best lead actress (play). I've found two actresses with three consecutive nods:
Rosemary Harris:
1984 Heartbreak House
1985 Pack of Lies
1986 Hay Fever
Colleen Dewhurst:
1972 All Over
1973 Mourning Becomes Electra
1974 A Moon for the Misbegotten (won)
***
update: it appears Judith Light is the only actress with three consecutive best featured actress in a play nominees.
***
update: no one has received three consec. best actress in a musical nods
***

***
update: no one has received three consec. best actor in a play nominations; or for best featured actor in a play

So that's three: Harris, Dewhurst and Light - and who could ask for three more deserving of the honor!?

Well according to that Wikipedia list, there's never been a back-to-back winner, so if she takes it home it will be a first!
(an incredibly deserved first)

Stephen Spinella won for Angels in America, both parts, in 93 & 94.
Albeit in 2 different categories.
This would be an impressive feat for JL nonetheless should she pull it off. Which, She Should!

Posted: 5/23/13 at 4:51pmWasn't a huge fan of Other Desert Cities OR Assembled Parties, but absolutely adored Judith Light's performances in both. More power to her for picking great projects-- anyone know what's in the pipeline for her for next season?

Apart from the nominations, very impressive that in three consec. seasons one actor found meaty roles in three NEW plays and made the most of them. How often does that happen? Light's recent success is beginning to suggest the kind of careers select Broadway stars had in the distant past. (note: each of Harris's and Dewhurst's nomination trifectas included 2 revivals)

Posted: 5/24/13 at 12:43pmIt seems like Judith Light has carved out a rather nice niche for herself on Broadway. A suggestion I'd casually made to a friend during the run of "Other Desert Cities" was that if the show were to remain open, I'd have loved to see Judith Light's take on Polly, particularly as I'm certain it would have been very interesting and different performance.

Gwen Verdon won twice in a row.
1958 Best Actress in a Musical for New Girl in Town (tied with co-star Thelma Ritter)
1959 Best Actress in a Musical for Redhead
She also won in 1954 (Can-Can) and 1956 (Damn Yankees).

Posted: 5/25/13 at 4:54pmI am in total agreement with you and you are absolutely correct about how deserving Judith Light is as a real person and then also as a great actress/performer. She always brings so much more to her performances and roles than just what's on the page/script/etc...I truly admire her and especially her work in fighting AIDS/Cancer/Human Rights. Even if she doesn't have a play lined up for next year I hope they bring her back on Dallas (after that nasty old Hollywood fall down the stairs routine)! Good Luck Judith!!

Posted: 5/25/13 at 5:16pmI remember seeing her on UGLY BETTY and being surprised that the lady from WHO'S THE BOSS was in it, then being completely blown away by her ability to combine humor and pathos so seamlessly. She was great on that show (shockingly, her only Emmy nomination comes from it). Then, I saw her in OTHER DESERT CITIES and thought she was out of the world.

Also, add her insane chemistry in her scenes with anyone on that show and she really brought Ugly Betty to a wonderful level of star power.
I still need to see her tread the boards and I am hoping to catch Assembled Parties in the coming weeks.
