Color Purple and She Loves Me have been my favorite revival productions of perhaps the last 3 years. And with Fiddler offering some things to like.. is this the only category this year with a real race? Just something fun to chat about as we head into the weekend. Happy Friday!
Best actress in a musical?
Best Actress? Best Actor? Best Featured Actor?
I think Best Actor in both a play and musical are really interesting categories this year too.

Let's not forget about Spring Awakening! This was one of my favorite revivals I've ever seen, personally. While I'm not expecting any wins, I think this is definitely going to get a couple nominations.
Also, She Loves Me will win. #sorrynotsorry
Having seen all contenders this season, including Audra, Cynthia Erivo is a lock at this point, up to Jessie Mueller's performance.

Between the two Hamilton male leads and Danny Burstein, Actor in a Musical will be an interesting category.
The five revivals from this season were the strongest batch we've received in years. I think most categories will be coming down to just one or two front runners, and even with as little as just 3 nominations, I don't see the revival category being that clear cut.
Will Scott Ellis be eligible for Best Director for She Loves Me having already been nominated for directing the last revival?
If Arthur Laurents earned two Tony nominations for directing two different revivals of Gypsy, then Scott Ellis will be eligible.
I think we could also see a race between Eclipsed and The Humans for Best Play.
Yes, he should be eligible. He directed this production differently than the one he did in '93.

As well as King Charles III, which personally was my favorite play of the season, though I have not seen Eclipsed yet.
I've seen Eclipsed, King Charles III, and The Humans and I would be hard pressed to pick a Best Play winner among the three. They're all quite different in tone and style and all of them feature very strong performances and direction.
I do hope The Humans wins for set design of a play though, it's so creative, and I love that it extended all the way down to the floor of the theatre itself.
perfectlymarvelous: "I love that it extended all the way down to the floor of the theatre itself."
What do you mean by that? I saw the show and everything was contained within the stage height?
I don't know if it was the same off Broadway, but the bottom part of the stage as well as the lip were made to look like concrete, and just as we are shown the apartment building sliced in half, we also see the inside of the concrete all the way down to the theatre floor. I was in the front row so it was literally in front of my face, I don't know if that particular detail is visible further back and in the mezzanine.

I thought last year was an extraordinary year for revivals. 20th Century, On the Town, The King and I.
Spring Awakening is going to be this year's Side Show.
I feel like The Color Purple is the one to beat.
I fear the "Spring Awakening" fans are setting themselves up for disappointment, as I did last year with "Side Show". It won't be nominated. Especially with the amazing revival season we're having.

As much as people on here would hate to admit, Hudson and Brooks are a serious threat for Renee for best featured actress in a musical. Hudson maybe even more than Brooks, Renee has good chances but shes far from a lock going up against these two. Unless Jennifer and Danielle cancel each other out. Can't wait to see what the nominations are.
^Don't forget Jane Krakowski.
Choosing between Leslie Odom and Danny Burstein will be difficult. Two masterful performances.
I still need to see Fiddler and I know Danny Burstein is a favorite in the community, but I really would be surprised to see anyone other than Leslie Odom Jr. win in that category. Even if his role is smaller than that of Tevye, he's just so good in the role. I've never heard any audience roar the way they did after The Room Where it Happens, and this was at a Tuesday night show in February. Of course, he's excellent in the rest of the show as well, but with that number I think he makes the biggest impression in a show filled with fantastic performances.
I think Leslie and Danny are probably in a dead heat with this one, having seen both. They're both giving once in a lifetime performances in roles that are tailor made for them. I would love to see them tie, but it's highly unlikely. My heart wants Danny to win, but Leslie gets the two best numbers in a show full of great ones and nails it. To me, that's the tightest race this year.
^But the thing with Odom is that he's really more of a co-lead in his show. Burstein on the other hand, is the central lead of his show.
And Danny is overdue.
