I think featured actress has Renee, Jane and Hudson as locks with Brooks, Simard, and Damiano fighting for the last spot. I hope Jane wins, Goldsberry's great but she's wonderful
^ spots*. There will likely be five nominees in that category total, per usual.

Also, book is one of the categories I don't think Hamilton's a lock for mostly because it doesn't really have one. I think that category is American Psycho or Waitress's most likely win.

This is patently false and there have been a number of threads in the past disproving this belief.

You are probably under the impression that the book is solely the non-sung dialogue of the show, but that's just incorrect. Hamilton will win Musical, Book, and Score, and the rest of the categories are a toss-up (they will probably win direction as well, in addition to a few other awards), and could go to other shows.
Just because Hamilton is largely sung through, doesn't mean it doesn't have a book. To put it in perspective, can you imagine adapting a musical dramedy from a 1,000 page straight historical biography? What a daunting task. The unique structure, personality and perspective in the way the story is told is the domain of the script. It along with the lyrics are truly the musical's greatest accomplishments.
I think Best Actor in a Musical is also up for grabs: Lin Manuel Miranda's performance in Hamilton is passable, but he is easily overshaddowed by Leslie Odom Jr., then there are the two actors that I think are actually giving the performances of their carears: Danny Burstein and Alex Brightman.
Case for Each:
Danny Burstein: Giving the performance of his carear as Tevye. He has been nominated 5 times already with no wins, he is this year's Kelli O'Hara. CON: His Tevye does not steal the show.
Alex Brightman: Is what makes School of Rock actually work on the stage. Anyone seeing the show is comes out of it exhausted just watching him. His performance has made him the "one to watch" being years, Patina Miller in Sister Act or Jessie Mueller in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, I would actually say his performance is on par with with James Corden in One Man Two Guvnors. CON: Its not the most nuanced of performances.
Leslie Oddom Jr. Gives One of the Best Performances in the Musical of the Season. I think Ms Goldsberry's performance is the only one in Hamilton that actual rivals Oddom. Con: It is telly part and not a showy one. If he were up of best supporting actor I would say he was a lock, but Best Actor will likley cause his performance to get lost in the shuffle especially in a year where voters will be looking for catagories where they can recognize shows that are Hamilton and Best Actor is easily one of those catagories.
This also does not add Benjamin Walker into the mix who I am sure will also be in competition of Best Actor.
I think we will definitely see Miranda, Burstein, Brightman, and Odom in that category. My wholehearted vote for the win is Odom.
I think the fifth spot could go to Walker, but could also perhaps go to Keenan-Bolger in Tuck or somebody from Shuffle Along. However, I doubt any upcoming spring performances will best the four I've mentioned to take a spot away from any of them.
I think Best Actor in a Play is another really interesting category, with Mark Strong, Tim Piggott-Smith, Reed Birney, Ben Whishaw, and Jeff Daniels all pretty deserving (and we haven't even seen Frank Langella.)
I honestly think Miranda's performance would be the first to go if they nominating committee wants throw a bone to another production, especially when they consider he is only doing 6 shows a week out of pure convience to Miranda.

Lin does 7 shows a week.

Doesn't Lin do 7 shows a week? It would be ridiculous for him to be doing 8 with his constant promotion/interviews for Hamilton, writing for Moana, having a one-year-old and all the other stuff we don't know about. I've never seen anyone go from looking younger than their age to looking completely exhausted and drained all the time so quickly. Hope he's looking after himself.

Don't forget Zachary Levi.

Very true. Could easily take that last spot.

I looked it up and the actress playing Nettie is Joaquina Kalukango. Say what you will but I think she deserves a featured nomination just as much as any of the color purple women do. That being said I think Renee will probably take the award.

Levi's been compared quite favorably to Jimmy Stewart and Tom Hanks in the rave reviews of ''She Loves Me,'' so he's really a contender, especially since his show is strong for Musical Revival.
But there may be more than 5 slots. Due to new Tony rules, the nominators have the discretion to go to 6 acting nominees (or even 7). Last year, Featured Actor in a Play had 6 nominees.

Aware that book is not just the written word that's not score (Les Miserables won it!), but I think the tonys will want to spread the wealth a bit since so many major categories are locked up by Hamilton- I saw Waitress and found it quite touching at the ART and AP has good buzz

Very interesting since the source material that inspired She Loves Me was also the basis for the Jimmy Stewart film The Shop Around the Corner as well as the Tom Hanks film You've Got Mail.

But only if there is a tie in the nominating process.

I really hope Birney is considered Featured. He's tremendous in The Humans, but the role is less impressive in comparison to something like Charles or Eddie Carbone. In Featured, I think Birney would be the odds-on favorite to win.

I think Birney is definitely the lead actor in The Humans but I can see why they would/could petition him for Featured. He would have stiff competition from the featured actors in King Charles III, The Crucible, and A View From The Bridge (and I suppose John Gallagher Jr. and Michael Shannon in Long Days... as well.)

For those of us who aren't into the minutiae of the nominating process for the Tony Awards, can someone briefly go over how the nominating committee chooses the nominees?
How many are on the committee this season?
Do the members of the nominating committee have to verify somehow they have seen all the shows that opened during the season?
Are ballots secret?
Does the committee have a meeting somewhere to decide all this, or are choices mailed/faxed/emailed in?
Do they each vote for 5 actors (directors, scenic designs, etc.) and the top 5 get the spots? Does there need to be a tie to get another nominee added to the mix or if one is close (say 1 or 2 points), are they added also? Or are ballots weighted (like 5 points for a nominator's top spot, 4 points for a nominator's second choice, and so on).
Thanks in advance.
Wouldn't be shocked to see Zachary Levi take that "last slot". I'd be willing to bet he got a few votes when he did FIRST DATE...and SHE LOVES ME is infinitely better.

Granted, I haven't seen Crucible yet (or Long Days... obviously) but I would be surprised to see any of the Featured men in A View from the Bride be under heavy consideration, and I say that as someone who adored the production. I do expect that at least one of the Princes will be nominated from King Charles III, and I certainly think they should be, but by the time the Tonys happen the show will have been closed for about six months, so I wonder how much traction they'd gain.
Based on how this thread has evolved, it sounds like the answer to the OP's question is a big ol' "NO"

While I think Reed Birney would probably win if he's put in Featured (he'd probably be the only acting win for The Humans; I LOVED Jayne Houdyshell but I can't see her beating any of the women in Eclipsed) , I wouldn't count out anyone from closed shows. The Tonys often award actors in closed plays, more so than from musicals (just look at Annaleigh Ashford last season.)
Then again, my choice for Best Featured Actor in a Play is Bill Camp from The Crucible.
