Wow! Thanks everyone. That place looks like a nightmare. Like a reviewer said the owner must know someone at the Health Departmant. IT makes Grey Gardens look like The Plaza. The worst was the photos of the people with bites on themselves. Just terrible. I mean I would never be able to fall asleep.

Posted: 8/18/09 at 10:23pmI've stayed there over the years a couple of times. Its hit or miss with the rooms, but I never had a room that looked like those pictures. If you are a single female or a group of females I would not recommend it. The guests are mostly international travelers..the problem stems from the people who actually live there. I went to NYC in July 2009 and stayed at a hotel called Hotel 30 30. Its 30 East 30th Street. Its not as good a location as the Carter, but I was greatly suprised how nice it was. I booked it on EasytoBook.com and with tax was $112. Had a private room and bath, extremely clean, but room is small. Other negative is the location...but subway is there or you can walk.

Nothing like Mimi climbing up the fire escape and it ripping off the Hotel.

A mouse carcass in the room??? All those bed bugs???
Bettyboy, if you even THINK about staying here I am going to kick you in the *ss!! You're better off sleeping under a bush in Central Park.

You've gotten some good alternate rec's, but let me throw in a couple more. First, go to kayak.com and throw in your travel dates, sort by price. This will give you a place to start.
Check out hotwire.com, see if anything interesting shows up. Priceline.com is also your friend because you can name your own price...but it can be a little tricky, so you happen to be in luck.... at betterbidding.com post a question on the New York board and they will help you form a bidding strategy.
Also, if you want any help with the above options PM me, I'll walk you through them.

As you've seen, YES, it is.
If you want to come to NYC, stay at the Day's Inn on 70th Street and Central Park West.
It's also $99 per night, but it's clean, and well located.

Posted: 8/19/09 at 9:47amOn TripAdvisor.com, the Hotel Carter is voted #363 out of 424 New York City hotels. The exciting thing to ponder is what could the 61 hotels rated below it be like?

LOL, Smaxie. Apparently, the New York Inn ranks below the Hotel Carter...The headline in the review screamed "PEE IN THE BED!"

Posted: 8/19/09 at 10:32amI would say steer clear of the Times Square Hostel, it was pretty grubby and not very private. But I would thoroughly recommend Jazz on the City (or Park, can't remember which). It's on 93rd and Amsterdam but it's only a brief subway ride away and you're right by Central Park. It's clean, friendly, popular and has a roof terrace. I think it was about $25 a night, though this was 2 years ago so I can't really remember.

Posted: 8/19/09 at 10:53amIn all fairness to Hotel Carter's #363 ranking, there are only 2 rated hotels below it. The rest have not been rated. So, that's 59 that could be better than it, but don't have anything yet.

Posted: 8/19/09 at 10:58amI also recommend the Jazz hostels if that is the route you want to go. They have a good number of locations throughout the city, including a new one on 51st between 8th and 9th. I stayed at Jazz on the Park (106th and CPW) a few years ago while rehearsing a show and had a great time. I was in the cheapest rate room, so there were a good number of other people in there, but everybody was very friendly. It was a lot of fun getting back from rehearsal between 7:00 - 8:00, grabbing a beer from the corner bodega and just hanging out drinking with the Europeans (who really seemed enamored with the concept of the 40 oz).
