#1Is the Hotel Carter a dump?
Posted: 8/18/09 at 1:56pmIt's $99 a night and close to theatres? What is wrong with this picture? Is the place a dump or too good to be true? Im trying to plan a trip in the fall.

It's been voted the filthiest hotel in New York.
Google it.

I think it's been voted Filthiest Hotel in America, actually.
But yeah, there's a bunch of threads on here about it.

Speaking from personal experience, the place is disgusting. The smell alone was vile.
There's a recent thread about it on the off-topic board.

Posted: 8/18/09 at 2:25pmYes it's dump. I have a TripAdvisor tee shirt with a quote about the Carter, "Rats, rats, rats."

Posted: 8/18/09 at 4:02pmIf you are looking for clean, basic, no frills accomodation try the Big Appel Hostel on 45th street. I looked at the Hotel Carter once and got as far as the lobby before backing off. It did not feel safe, nor clean. The location is pretty good but there's a reason why they haven't raised their prices in the last 10 years.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 8/18/09 at 4:10pmYeah, I'd steer clear of the Carter. I remember the story about the prostitute who was found cut up and put into bags and shoved under one of the beds.

"If you are looking for clean, basic, no frills accomodation try the Big Appel Hostel on 45th street."
I agree with this. It is a hostel and you have to share a room and bathroom with people but it's cleaner than most hotels I been in. At anywhere from $32-45 a night you can't beat the price or the location. It's on 45th St. right in the heart of Times Square.

Well, put it this way. I used to work in the apartment rental business. Nothing major. Just a few two-family properties that my relatives owned and I helped manage. If we had conditions like that in the units - and we never did except when bad tenants would trash the place - we'd have been sued by angry tenants and reported for violated the "warrant of habitability."
