It Looked Great - On paper

Some shows looked great - idea wise - but laid an egg when presented

Well I loved the music to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but didn't like the show when I saw it with the OBC, if that counts.

BIG is the first thing that popped into my head. Everyone was absolutely sold that it was going to be the biggest hit Broadway had seen in years - before it actually started performances.

Honestly, I thought Tarzan might be good. I enjoyed the film and its songs. I enjoyed the director's work (at least as a designer). I knew it wouldn't get rave reviews, but I never thought it'd be such a stinker.

Dracula - had solid backing (and decent reviews) from La Jolla, a Tony winning creative team, and a well known, talented cast.

I go with Carrie. A divine cast, a great concept. It could have been really delicious theatre with all the camp, tragedy, and interesting relationship dynamics. But alas, it never came together. Maybe if Charles Busch were involved it might have been better.

What about Dance of the Vampires? It was supposed to be the original Phantom Michael Crawford's big return to Broadway.

How about Merrily? Didn't they move Annie out of it's theatre for it? I could also say Anyone can Whistle. Both have awesome scores but on stage something doesn't work

I'm going to actually say Woman in White. Remember "it's the Phantom of the Opera for the 21st Century..." "It will enjoy many years blah blah blah." The theatre won't need to worry about finding a new show for a while etc.

Dracula had no chance as it was a Wildhorn show

'The Odd Couple' with Lane and Broderick seemed like a good idea...

Gantry's such a good idea on paper that I still can't believe no one has found an effective way to musicalize it.

Guess I'd have to agree with "Woman in White." I didn't see it, but I have the cast recording. It sounds like a couple of fun and witty songs with Michael Crawford, and then a bunch of shrieking and screaming from everyone else. And I can't listen to a lyric like "I believe my heart, it believes in you" without wincing. Too bad -- it could've been a great show.

UGH! I am so sick and tired of rude and mean-spirited people who have nothing positive to do or say and start negative threads and bash... Not every WICKED fan is a 9 year old "squeeing fangirl." The movie versions of PHANTOM, THE PRODUCERS and RENT are awesome and beloved although not box office smashes. Just because they didn't pull as much money in Hollywood as they do on Broadway...

madbrian, THE ODD COUPLE with Nathan & Matthew WAS a good idea and was very successful. Fans loved it. *I* and many others loved it. Yes it got mixed critical reviews, but so do many shows that are/were great.

Mr Roxy, Wildhorn is VERY talanted. JEKYLL & HYDE is incredible and so are elements of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL. They were successful on Broadway and have both had many regional productions.

End of rant.

There is something good about every show and every performer. Look for it, I promise it's there re: It Looked Great - On paper
