I feel like this is too bizarre to be true. But at the same time, I haven't seen it and this is only making me nervous about not getting a chance!

Very sad news. I loved this show. It wasn't all that thought provoking, sad or sappy. It was a very simple and enjoyable afternoon/night at the theatre.
Sad to see it go.

Sad to see it go, but Hairspray will always be "timeless to me".

I never thought HAIRSPRAY would be one of the shows too close in the coming months. Ah, well. It had a great run and is, I believe, one of the best musical comedies ever written. It looks like GUYS AND DOLLS may have a theatre after all.

I have a feeling that maybe "Hairspray" is closing because "Ever After" is coming out next year (if all things go well). Both shows are produced by Adam Epstein. This also makes sense because in an interview last year, Epstein stated that he already has a theater for "Ever After" but he wouldn't say which one.

Broadway is falling apart before my very eyes.
Will the tour continue, because I'm seeing it at the end of January.

Wow! I did not expect Hairspray to be the next to announce its closing! So sad
It is a great show and will be missed.

Wow, this really came out of left field! Sucks for the cast and crew and all the fans but it definitely had a good run and who'd have thought it would have proven to be such a success!
And to all the people saying that Broadway is going away, do you know all the shows that are waiting around for a theater? Look at how many just this coming season that had to halt production because there aren't enough theaters in the city. Now I'm not glad that people are out of work or anything but not every show can (and probably should) run for years and years and years. Heck back in the "Golden Age" of Broadway, a show that ran for 3-5 years was as remarkable as Phantom's run is to us. There was always change over back then because who wants to have the same 20 shows for decades. I can totally understand those who are upset because it does suck but perhaps a new show comes in and you'll love it just as much.

So now it is official?
Does anyone know any codes for discounts in January? I can only find a discount code through November...

I just got my ticket sans discount (front row, front mezzanine).
Now if they would reinstitute all the cut costumes back into the show.
I was kind of hoping that Michael Ball would have come over to the Broadway company as Edna.

Their ticket prices are ridiculous... I love the show, but I will NOT pay THAT much for tickets.

Watch out... no show is safe. Wicked is probably next.

ya, i think its a market strategy this is from the playbill.com article
"It's not hard to guess that Fierstein's presence (and the announcement that the show is in its final months) is expected to re-ignite the box office and that the show just might stay on fire into the spring — or even beyond. (The closing notice of Rent excited theatregoers and prompted an extension beyond the first planned closing date.)"

I am truly shocked and deeply, deeply saddened. I feel like I just found out I'm losing a friend and someone punched me square in the stomach. I just ordered my tickets on Ticketmaster. Front mezz... row C was the best available for me. $110 bucks a pop is expensive, and I still have to pay for airfare, too... but I don't care. I always told myself I'd be there for closing night and I will be. I have to be. And now I'm going to be selfish and really hope they don't extend, and that the 6:30 show on January 18th IS the final show.
I noticed HAIRSPRAY's numbers have been poor lately, but I didn't think it had reached the point that it would have to close. I thought they would have resorted to some major stunt casting before they put up the closing notice. But at the same time, what a PRO is Harvey for returning to the show, and stepping into those high heels for one final time. We all know he surely didn't have to. But he loves his fans, and he loves this show and he hasn't forgotten all that this show has given both himself and so many other people.
What a night January 18th will be. Thank you, Marc and Scott for giving us a show wrapped in warmth, humor, fun and fighting spirit. Six-and-a-half years and what, one of the top 20 longest running shows in Broadway history? What a legacy. What a gift. No one will ever be able to stop the beat.

Hairspray will always be one of my favorite shows. It was the show that made me love musical theatre. It made me realize that the broadway stage was something I had to be a part of it in the future. Although it is not a show that does not have a complex story line, the music, the dancing, and the joy the cast brings on that stage every night surpasses every other show I have seen, including Wicked. I know, without a doubt, that the character of Tracy has inspired many young girls, like myself, to follow their dreams, no matter what they are. The show is just a happy go lucky one.
