Oh...snap. Finally a closing that truly resonates with me. This is truly sad, but what's even sadder, and somewhat scary is that it's been one closing notice after another. Is Ave Q next (after all, it is the next in line of Best Musical winners)...

i say Spring Awakening is next, then Avenue Q. Might be a lot of empty theaters this winter/spring.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

While not my first show, Hairspray was definitely my favourite, and it's the show that made me really, truly passionate about Broadway and musical theatre. It's heartbreaking to hear this. I finally got to see it in July of 2007, and it was an absolute dream come true; completely perfect. Can't really believe this.
Put me on the list of "If Avenue Q is next, I'll explode..."

Hairspray was my first Broadway show I saw in NYC. I have seen it twice again Broadway, and twice on tour. I'm going to try to get the money to go up there to see it one last time, but that seems unlikely. But I will see.
Broadway Shows I've Seen: Hairspray, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors (2003), The Wedding Singer, Spamalot, Riverdance, Rent, Beauty and the Beast, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera, Sweet Charity (revival), Drowsy Chaperone, The Lion King, Dreamgirls(2010 Tour).

It the first show I actually saw on Broadway, too. It was a graduation gift from my dad
I know there's no possible way I'll get to see it before January, though. But it was always my plan to go back to see it again (many times). I bought my tickets for the tour this week and now it's going to be bitter sweet.

Well it will be close to the 31st anniversary (1/15/7
of the first Broadway show I saw and at the same theatre, same section, too. Hairspray holds the record for the show I've seen the most (20).

im betting the goal is to get people into the theater and extend it into february/march, then let another show come in for the spring.
however, in this economy, im guessing not many people will be flocking to see it one last time... so who knows

Why, oh why, oh why? All of our precious bubblegum pop musicals are being washed away on Broadway... and Hairspray, the greatest of them all
Legally Blonde closing I could live with, seriously. Xanadu I shed a tear for. But Hairspray... that's one great frosh of puberty I could live with forever!!

I'll be sad to see it go, but the show has had an amazing run. Based on the Playbill article, they are DEFINITELY leaving the door open to extend, so who knows. Maybe sales will pick up over the holidays, especially with Harvey coming back.
I'm going to have to go back to see him. As wonderful as the show is in every way, Harvey's performance as Edna is what I found to be the most special, touching, and remarkable thing about the whole experience. As I watched, I was amazed that he wasn't Harvey in drag; he was a sweet, endearing WOMAN who needed some reassurance to be all she could be.
His performance was hilarious, believable, brilliant, and moving.

So is it Official or not?
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

Seriously...
shows aren't allowed to close on my birthday.. I don't like the fact that I'll remember that Hairspray closed on my birthday for the rest of my life.
sad, sad news.

This is really sad news
HAIRSPRAY is on the TOP 3 of my favorite musicals of all time and I was blessed to se it with almost ALL of the Original cast (besides Marissa) and what a fantastic all-star cast that was ! Harvey, Dick, Laura, Kerry, Mary, Jackie and of course MATT !!! It will always have a special place in my heart, though it seemed tired when I saw it again in April !
So, bring on the LOOOOONG awaited CATCH ME IF YOU CAN ??? Broadway simply cannot be without a Marc and Scott show !!!!!

Hairspray's closing is NOT a rumor...the cast was informed today that the final performance is on January 18. Harvey Fiersteins return to the show, however, IS a rumor.
Whereas Zac Efron going into Joseph in the West End, the bit I was responding to, is NOTHING but rumour. :P

Wow, another one bites the dust! Well I have always wanted to see it with Harvey and I guess now I will have the chance. It did have a good run though.

While I don't have enough of an "emotional" attachment to the show to merit a closing night visit, I may try again before it closes, especially if Harvey's back. Bring Jackie Hoffman back while you're at it.
The show is just such a joy. Saw it three times on Broadway and once on tour and it's the rare show in which the touring company pretty much equaled the Broadway crew.

Ole Chum,
What do you mean "The first show is the last show. Then, theyre going to perform the 6:30 show."?
I checked ticketmaster and they do have two shows on 1/18. Which one should I go to? The 6:30 one?

Good news, for me; I've never seen Harvey in the role.
