I hate to say it, but I TOLD YA SO.
Jane Lynch was horrible, just awful tonight on the Tonys. No one will ever take the place of the wonderful Dottie Loudon. What that woman was doing up there tonight I'll never know.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 12:28amI thought Jane was great tonight. She has a wonderful stage presence and even if she doesn't have great control of her voice, she is FUN in a FUN role in a FUN revival and it was a pleasure to see her on the Tony broadcast.

Forgive me, but I believe if someone is up on that stage, and I've paid $130, they ought to be able to SING BETTER THAN I CAN!
I am sorry, but I am sick and tired of television nobodies getting up on stage (ie Christie Brinkley in Chicago, Brooke Shields in whatever she's in). Time to get back to basics, folks. Otherwise Broadway will die.

How do we know they are not better singers than you? Video or you are worse.

Jane sang the hell out of the song, sounded great,, and smiled like a total idiot through the whole thing. She had no idea what she was singing about or who the character was.
Some people just can't sing and act at the same time (Russell Crowe anyone?).

Hate to tell you but you are insane! Jane was brilliant. Dorothy Louden was beyond incredible but since she has passed on other people will have to play the role when the show is produced..

Forgive me, but why would you go on line to show your ignorance?
1) I thought that Jane nailed it so what the hell are you talking about?
2) I am sure she can sing better than you. If you are so good why aren't you starring in a Bwy show instead of bitching on here?
3) I think we all can agree that you are sick and TIRED! However, the fact it that many a Broadway show need a name to sell (and that ain't you missy). Yes, many stars are miscast and don't have the talent to do a stage show. (That is an issue for the producers.) Jane Lynch started at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and I think that is a very solid background. She is a major star and is perfect for this role.
Get over yourself! If you are so good get off your fat butt and become a star. This nasty people like you can come on here and trash your talentless self.

There is no doubt that there are great singers even at community theatre but again, get real. Jane was one of the better replacement stars I have seen in a long time.
Maybe you should limit your viewing to the Northboro Community Players- maybe they will cast you in something.

If you don't like someone's performance, fine, but you're coming off more as someone who is bitter for being turned down for a Broadway role.
I disagree with you about Jane being a "television nobody." Aside from that just because someone has been on TV before or has done movies doesn't mean they have no right on stage. There are plenty of respectable TV/movie actors who have proven themselves onstage. I'm not denying stunt casting, but you shouldn't be so quick to shut-down someone just because of a heavy TV/movie career.
Jane did a fine job on the Tony's. Is she the best singer in the world? No. But I think based on what I saw last night, she is perfect for the role. And judging by what I've read from others on here, I think we can safely say the majority agree.

Personally, I don't have any problem with them casting her (or TV people or royalty or football stars). As long as they can deliver the goods.
I just have a problem that Jane Lynch smiled incessantly during the song. It was weirdly disconnected from the material.
But she can sing. And act. Just not together, at the same time.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 8:40amYes, her sunny look was totally at odds with the lyrics she was singing. If she meant the smiling to be ironic or a grimace, she didn't succeed. But she sounded fine, vocally.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 8:57amI never "got" what Katie was doing with the role. Was Hannigan just an evil bitch? Was she a sloppy and unfunny alcoholic? I found nothing funny about her performance and couldn't figure out exactly where she was trying to go with the character. Last night I thought Jane's focus seemed rather haphazard, but at least her Little Girls was much funnier that Katie's. (example was that big swig out of the bottle, which seemed rushed because of getting back to the music. I'd have loved the music to just stop while she took a really long one, relaxed, and then hopped back into the song.)

This is is pure conjecture, I know. But while watching the broadcast I got the gut feeling Lynch was suddenly overwhelmed by the joyous mood of the evening and the enormity of the event.
She started as Hannigan and then you could almost see her brain switch to "OMG I'M ON THE F*CKIN' TONYS" and then she simple couldn't pull it back.
Again, just my impression

This! Perfectly put, I didn't get Miss Hannigan at all from her performance. I immediately rewatched Loudon's brilliant Tony turn performing "Easy Street" (during which the audience bursts into applause like three times), I laugh at different parts every time, and I just marvel at her performance. Lynch is so good, she definitely sounds and acts better than Finneran on the cast recording, but regardless of how she performs the song in the show I attribute this to poor direction. I think she'd have been an ideal Hannigan if this was the kind of revival where magic happens.

I wouldn't fault the director. I think we need to admit that Hannigan is not a terribly well written role and LITTLE GIRLS is a pretty mediorce "comic" song.
There isn't much "acting" to do. The best Hannigans have been commediennes who brought their unique comic sensiblities and showmanship to the role, outshing the writing.
Loudon was the best at making the most of oridnary material. She left the impression that there was more there there. Hannigan isn't Hamlet or even Mama Rose. At best it is an opportunity for great comic character actors (which seem to be dying breed) to shine a little brighter than usual.
