I flew in from Los Angeles to attend Jason's memorial service at the New Am on April 8, 2004. But I don't think I have any words to describe it.
The one thing I do remember are the pictures. They had a projector set up in the back and a big screen on stage, and during the performances they'd show picture after picture of Jason. There were SO MANY PICTURES...from his childhood, his teens, his Lion King days, his post Lion King days, up until the very last pictures taken in Australia just weeks prior to his death. They also showed us a clip from his television show "Keeping It Wild," a clip from his Disney Channel concert, and a clip from a home movie in which Jason couldn't have been more than eight or nine years old, baking cookies or something in the kitchen and laughing as he turned around and realized there was a camera there!
Heather performed "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and the woman playing Rafiki sang "He Lives In You" with the chorus members. Then the chorus members from South Africa performed their own memorial rite, which was actually the most uplifting thing I've ever seen. They said that in Africa, they believe that the soul goes on and compared Jason's spirit to an eagle soaring higher and higher. They were dancing and drumming and it wasn't long before we were all on our feet, clapping along and shouting our encouragement.
They left "Endless Night" for Jason to sing, playing his recording through the sound system at the very end of the service. That was the hardest part for me, and judging from all the sniffling I heard and all the tissues I saw coming out during the song, it was the hardest part for a lot of us there. But just as that last note of his went soaring through the theater, we all burst into applause...just like he had always wanted to happen at the end of that song!
It's weird how this doesn't really get much easier as time goes on. You think that after a while, you'll be able to talk about it or write about it without crying...that time hasn't come for me yet. I guess it's just one of those things that you learn to live with, but never really get over. Jason was very important to me. I only hope that I did everything I could to show him, and that he understood.
I FINALLY saw The Lion King for the first time this past weekend. I've had the cast recording for years and love Jason's voice. I wish I saw him. So sad that a talent like that was taken so early
His performance of "Levon", one of my favorite Elton John songs, was truly awesome. One of the best vocals of that night, and at THIS IS YOUR SONG nearly every performance was a thrilling highlight. He infused his words with so much feeling and emotion.
I had the good fortune to see his performance in The Lion King when I was just 10.
I couldn't believe the news when I found out he died.
