How was the concert Margo? I wish i was able to see it. All 3 of those shows (Floyd, Falsettos, Violet) were soldout before I got tickets.
I know this is an old thread, but I figured it wasn't good to start a new one.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT JEANINE TESORI IS UP TO THESE DAYS???
I love Jeanine. I ran into her a few weeks ago at Joe's Pub.
She told me she has many projects in the works. Including another with Tony Kushner.
I can't wait. I wish she would bring back Violet.
Jeanine is wonderful.
The concert at Playwrights Horizons was breathtaking. I am glad Macgruder raved about it to me.
Loved it.
Wow. Thanks, Corine.
I wonder what the new Kushner- Tesori project is about!
I don't know.
I usually see Tony more then Jeanine though.
Bumping this thread as I want to bump some love towards Tesori…
Kimberly Akimbo has been the highlight of the season so far for me and I cannot wait for the cast recording. I am also grateful that I also got back to Caroline this past December. This morning I listened, for the first time, to her Twelfth Night and my soul is simply soaring. It is so beautiful.

Did anyone see her new opera Blue she wrote with Tazewell Thompson that premiered at Glimmerglass a few summers ago? I think so far most of its other productions were postponed due to Covid, other than at Michigan Opera Theatre this past September.
I'm just gonna put it out there that her score for Shrek is underrated
I would argue that all of Tesori's works are underrated. All of her scores are extremely well polished and any problems they may have are lyric issues. Lisa Kron and Tesori need to work together again, this has been the best pairing in my opinion.

You got me thinking: has she ever worked with a lyricist who didn't also write the book? I can't think of a single one offhand. And so, I think part part of the underlying trend you're describing is that she mostly works with playwrights who write lyrics, rather than lyricists.
However, I think the net result of this trend has been more good than bad. Part of what makes Tesori so good is her ability to fully integrate the musical storytelling into the text, which is best accomplished when working with a single librettist. And it allows her collaborations to prioritize story and structure to a degree that's rarely seen these days.

Yes, I believe that she has only worked with playwrights, who also act as lyricists (though someone correct me if I'm wrong!). I didn't mean to imply that all lyrics in Tesori's shows are poor, quite the contrary, but there have definitely been some clunky lyrics throughout. I agree, though - having a playwright as your book writer has provided Tesori shows with an emotional underlining that elevates the material further. Many themes in Tesori shows are similar, even if the playwrights have differed, and that I attest is the genius of Tesori.

She actually did an opera called "Blue" or something like that. Really interested in that
Though they didn’t collaborate creatively on the Spielberg WEST SIDE STORY, she was the film’s vocal coach.
