Sounds like SMASH might be getting big for him.
Didn't see that one coming!
Will COTT get an alternate?
Wow... that's a surprise! But I wonder if Disney anticipated this in bringing in Cott, rather than having the two understudies perform the roll when conflicts for "Smash" arose.
I'm going to guess THEY knew.
^ Ha, yeah... I really meant was I wondered whether it was the impetus for the auditions for a "Jack Kelly standby." But I think they are still seeking a standby, and I'm just going to shut up now :)

Wondering if Jeremy comes back after SMASH..

I bet Jeremy will be like Gavin Lee is to Mary Poppins.
So I guess Jeremy went from being a recurring role to a series regular for SMASH? I'm excited for him.
How often has Jeremy been out of the show in recent weeks by the way?

I think he's missed at max like four shows? I know both Mike Faist and Brendon Stimson went on before Corey began, and Corey went on for a matinee (and perhaps evening).
Oh okay thanks! I'm seeing the show at the end of July and would love to see Jeremy in it before he leaves!
Jordan was a regular from the gitgo and they have been filming for a month so obviously he's not leaving for SMASH.
Just makes good copy, he's probably getting old and tired.
The nytimes has a good article giving his reasoning. He got Smash around the same time as Newsies opened, but thought he cpuld handle it. He underestimated the time commitment of Smash. He always knew he would eventually leave Newsies for Smash, but he thought he could stick it out for a little longer. He said he also didn't want to get a "reputation" for missing performances. Honestly if he were doing a straight drama or a sitcom he would probably be fine, but Smash being a musical drama, he has added rehersals for choreography and voice.
I was correct, old and tired.
bdn, don't believe everything you read in the nytimes.
Yes basically but he did stick it out 6 months, so its not like hes a Jermey Piven (Speed the Plow) or Megan Mullally (Lips Together Teeth Apart)
Does Cott do a specific set of performances at alternate, such as matinees or both shows Wednesdays or something like that? I want to go back to see Jeremy before he leaves and would hate to miss him.
He stuck it out because he was under contract.
Just to make this clear - Corey is a standby, not an alternate. There's no set schedule for him to go on, he simply goes on when Jeremy is out.

This surprises me. Not the fact that Jeremy is leaving, but the fact that Corey Cott is taking over. I heard a few days ago that he was joining one of the Wicked tours as a Fiyero understudy. I guess he turned that down to do Newsies (a better career choice, in my opinion).
Clumsy - From the BWW article:
"Cott became the Jack Kelly alternate earlier this month and will continue as alternate until he assumes the role full time."

I'm always a bit skeptical of most media sources, but having an anonymous poster on a public message board imply that you should take his word over a reasonably credible news outlet is actually pretty funny, especially when he offers no reason why his insight with regard to this show or this actor should be taken anymore seriously than the noise coming from a barking dog.
Well, they sure have a funny definition of alternate, because Corey has only gone on once and doesn't have a regular alternate schedule. By definition - he's a standby, but I guess Disney is the king of redefining things.

Glad to hear Corey is taking over and I would definitely be thrilled to see him in the role if I see the show again. Jeremy was amazing as is Corey too.
ElphabaGoodman: I think maybe later down the road Corey would make a good Fiyero.
