At least her comment drew the attention away from that fabric she was wearing re: Julia Roberts: 'You are all very talented people...' (please read on)

I think all the best intentions were behind the comment, just the timing and the delivery of it made it sound a bit ingenuine.

From Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hollywood's most highly paid actress Julia Roberts was panned by critics in her Broadway stage debut this year, but she may have won a few friends in New York at Sunday night's Tony Awards by eating humble pie.

Roberts, whose performance in "Three Days of Rain" got scathing reviews, swallowed her pride at not being nominated for a Tony and made an appearance to present the award for best actor to Richard Griffiths of "The History Boys."

Roberts won a warm round of applause for acknowledging her lack of stage credentials: "I just want to take this opportunity to say that you people are insanely talented," the Oscar-winning actress told the audience full of Broadway stars.

...If a theatre full of Broadway stars offers a warm round of applause then that's what really matters.

As others have said, I think Roberts was genuine when she said that, and I had no problem with it at all.

Yes, I don't know why there's all this over-analyzation. She probably could've worded it better, maybe, "I feel so honored to share this stage with all of you talented people," or something like that, but I think she was genuine.

In part of her speech she said "You are insanely talented people". This looks like an ambiguous statement. The etymology for this word is absurd (as in theater of the absurd). She might have been reacting to the constant publicity that has been written about Three Days of Rain since it began. It can be taken either way.

The people I was watching the Tonys with thought that Roberts starting the sentiment with "you people" made her sound like she thought she was looking down from somewhere high and mighty. I think her total exclusion of herself was what bothered some people about her wording and made it sound the opposite of humbling, even if she was sincere (and after the time she's had, she probably was).

"I thought that that was just going to be a like one shot deal for me, you know, but they kept talking about it like, 'when we do the production, when we do the production', and I was like, 'yes, yes, when you do the production, cool, I will come and see it'". - John Gallagher Jr. on SA
