"I think she meant it as she is realizing, after her first time on Broadway, that it's not as easy as people say it is."

I think that's reading a lot into what she said.

For so many people who believe she is untalented, the criticism against her in this thread seems to be based on a TON of subtext she gave off in one sentence. If she got all of you believing all that, wll now THAT is a good actress.

Dottie - Imagine if she stuck to the teleprompter! She would have been called "wooden" and "disrespectful" for not acknowledging the Broadway community which welcomed an undeserving Hollywood hack or some such nonsense. These people would have found any reason to bitch about her simply because she is Julia Roberts, she is a huge Hollywood star, and therefore must be hated and defiled. Whatever. Mountains out of molehills.

It took a lot of class to get up and say that. Yes she is not my favorite actor, I think she learned just how hard Broadway really is. So she actually went up a bit in my book.

"You people" sorry, was that talking down or her announcement that she's going to fold and run?

"insanely" sorry, how about "immensely" I must question the word choice.

And that puppy dog look on her face, sorry again, if was like she was noting the abuse and wanted the world to know she was bruised.

She's "on stage -- a place where the spoken word is refined, refined and refined again before spoken. I think it is great that she wanted to pay her respects to the theatre community, but why with street language?

I agree that she likely meant it very sincerely, but "you people" was definitely a bad choice of words. I was very surprised when I heard her say it.

A lot of presenters called a lot more attention to themselves than her.

If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

Once again I think she was just humbled by the whole experience.
With the harsh reviews she got, it took quite a bit of courage to show up, and if she didn't show up she would be trashed for that. So what I am hoping for is that she takes this as an opportunity to learn the craft and come back to B-way.

I think everyone is overanalyzing this WAY TOO MUCH.

I think we all realize what Julia's intentions were, but some of us just want to turn it into something else.

I think we all realize that she intended it as a compliment to all theatre actors and that using the phrase "you people" was illustrating how she is not one of them in the sense that they are above her.

She sounded like a teenage fan. But it was just nice of her to show up although she wasn't nominated.

"'You people' sorry, was that talking down or her announcement that she's going to fold and run?"

Neither.

"'insanely' sorry, how about 'immensely' I must question the word choice."

Obviously, you must because you can't seem to restrain yourself from overanalyzing every word, facial expression, and negative subtext possibility of every nanosecond in her presentation.

"And that puppy dog look on her face, sorry again, if was like she was noting the abuse and wanted the world to know she was bruised."

Again, you're giving her a lot of credit for her acting abilities. That is a lot to read into a facial expression for an intro to presenting an award. She must be BRILLIANT.

"on stage -- a place where the spoken word is refined, refined and refined again before spoken."

Since when is the stage strictly limited to "refined" speech? It was "on stage" where the Oscar winning writers of "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" accepted their award.

Love how some people can take something as innocent as Julia Roberts lavishing praise on already woefully underappreciated performers and turn it into a "she was selfish and self-centered" rant. Methinks these people are mighty closed-minded folks who have already drawn up their own opinions on Ms. Roberts and will take anything she says or does to manipulate her statements into their already made-up minds. Real sad.

KuhnKrazy - The assumed "I" at the beginning of your first sentence talked down to your audience in a most self-gratifying and smug way. Obviously, by using "Methinks", you are not only patronizing the entire world, but it immediately makes me find a reason to make the thread about you, which means you wanted to make me find a reason, which means you made this entire message board about you. I can tell by your punctuation that you are attempting to tell everyone how much lower they are than yourself, how hurt you are that no one has mentioned you until this point, your feelings on the battle of Bunker Hill, your height, your weight, your preference in sugar-free gelatine flavors, and your math scores on your PSAT. You are on a message board where the written word is refined and pasteurized and processed and homogenized until written.

"Real sad" - I have to question your use of street language. I don't know what the question is, but when I think of one, it will be BAD.

Oh, come on, there's definitely propaganda either way. From the people who think that she was talking down to the theater acters or making it all about herself to those who thought she was "lavishing praise" (which she was notj) it's all in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I wouldn't have remembered the quote if someone hadn't pointed it out. I'm not a Julia Roberts fan but honestly, I really don't care about what she said.

I really respect the fact that Julia said that. I think that it's wonderful of her to commend Broadway actors, as she has the status of "Superstar Hollywood actress." It's great that she addressed that, I really eppreciated her saying that, and I'm sure a lot of the people in the audience did as well.

This thread is not about you. GOD!

The whole purpose of this thread is to point out how Julia has to make everything about her. Even this thread, which was created by people who don't like her and complain about how she steals focus all the time. Which means, either Julia started this thread herself, or the people who are complaining about her are giving her the attention they feel she constantly demands. Wow, she is beyond brilliant.

"I, too, was taken back by her statement "you people"; how rude."

Personally, I am taken back by your horrible sentence: "After Oprah came, people screaming for her the rest of the night, if Julia came it would have been the same thing," which is barely coherent. It seems as though you didn't entirely proofread your post before posting it. How rude.

"I think it was a sincere attempt at grace and humility that inadvertantly showed an attitude of superiority and separation. The words "you people" were especially unfortunate. It was nice of her to try any sort of a compliment considering how she's been raked over the coals, but it definitely could have been done more eloquently."

I agree with this statement. Perhaps, though, she felt as if using "street" language would seem even more humble. If she used big fancy words and structured her sentances to put the utmost importance on what she was saying everyone would be frothing at the mouth over her SCRIPTING HER FIVE SECOND NON-SCRIPTED COMMENT! GOOD HEAVENS!!!! To me, it seemed as if she just really wanted to address all these people she has great respect for. Due to her language choice, I doubt she was standing backstage going over exactly what she was going to say in her mind. To analyze things further (because it's completely necessary. obviously.), the way she said; "you people" was done in such a manner she was indeed segregating herself but as to put "those people" ABOVE her. It was like when a young male wolf gets a little too ambitious and tries to take the dominant male's food before he's done. The dominant male growls and says "back off you little pisser" and the young male rethinks the situation and learns from it. So he rolls over and flashes the white hair on his belly to show he understand the way things work now and respects the dominant male and wants to be a member of the pack.

AHAHAHAHAHA OMG I'm so proud of that analogy it's so cracked out. Yay me. [I JUST MADE THIS POST ABOUT ME. OMG. ATTENTION WHORE.]

SHE'S HUMAN. GIVE HER A BREAK. Or is that too much too ask because she's "Julia Roberts"?

Also, I highly doubt it was her choice to present the award solo. So to use that against her is just ridiculous.

Anakela posts this on the "worst speech" string. (Sorry, the link didn't transfer)

E! Online News has a crack about Julia's 'speech':

"The History Boys winning six Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Actor and Best Director; Jersey Boys winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical. Julia Roberts, who was not nominated for her reviled performance in Three Days of Rain, proving that she can act by playing the part of a humble presenter."

I hated that she referred to us as "you people". What does that mean?

It was a sweet gesture. I think she meant well. And people can and will take things however they want.

I thought the statement was gracious.

But, did anyone else notice how the model person giving the awards to the people, had to pull her out of the shot, when whoever it was, gave their speech?
