I thought she sounded quite humble, actually. She slipped into a whole new ballgame in which the critics and awards weren't going to be blinded by her celebrity. No doubt it was a difficult adjustment after the years of ass-kissing she' accustomed to. Good for her. And I think those who are bitter about her success would think anything she would have said last night was "all about her", because what she said certainly wasn't.

"Every times she presents an award she decides to ad lib something to extend her time on stage."

Please. That describes 75% of the presenters on any awards show. It's not specific to Roberts.

It was someone elses moment. Period. That's the point.

I agree with that.

Again, I love me some Julia Roberts on screen, but as I said in another thread on here, it was too much of a "look at me! look at me! I have to say something that the papers will quote tomorrow!!" moment, instead of an "I am here to present an award..." moment like it should have been.

I mean, what other presenters' intros can you still remember from last night- can anyone quote what Norbert said when he introduced the clip of awards given out earlier? Or what Kristen Bell said in her intro? (Ok, I do remember the Republican puppet bit.)
Versus how it seems like we all remember Julia. But then again, I guess that was the point.

Julia always makes it about herself. Always.

And for those of you asking why she wasn't more eloquent or articulate - are you kidding me?

that's ridiculous. you remember what julia said because there's been so much hype about her coming to the awards after the would she wouldn't she when she didn't get a nomination and the fact that, duh, it's julia roberts.

as for norbert, he mad a quip about a black tie clambake. paul rudd couldn't see a damn thing and joked about lasik. paul schaffer gushed that he was out there with barbara cook. different people remember different things for different reasons. julia's comment didn't even register for me, just seemed like she was saying something to say something.

i mean if we're going to take her to task, let's go line by line through the telecast and de-construct every comment made by every presenter. geez, folks. sometimes a quip is just a quip.

I am normally not a Julia fan, though I think most of her movies are kind of cute, but I thought her remark was quite humble. It could have been a way of thanking the Broadway community for being an example during her experience and her realizing the immense amount of talent and dedication it takes to succeed on the stage. She said it before she started presenting the award, so I don't think it took away from the winner's moment.

i really hate it when the person giving out the award makes the moment about themselves and their comments. it takes away from the moment and julia is the QUEEN of that...

The queen would have to be Oprah; but, Julia is certainly a princess.

She said it before she got to presenting. It took all of five seconds. She wasn't even talking about herself. Are you kidding me?

Julia Roberts complimenting your talent is like Charlton Heston complimenting your memory.

Why can't she simply take the stage and put the focus on other performers? If it only takes a few seconds then why can't she just zip it!
She was out there to present and for no other reason. Her entire reason to be on that stage was to present, not to have Julia's little moment.
One day, when you are getting an award and someone starts making comments I know you will be all "Shut up bitch!"

She DID put the focus on other performers.

She complimented the Broadway community.

Why can't she simply take the stage and put the focus on other performers?

She did. She noted that they were all insanely talented. How exactly is that about her? I'm with Papa. If you deconstruct the comments made by other presenters, some of our broadway gems would qualify much higher on the "all about me" meter by your own logic. I think people are looking for an issue when there isn't one.

So in other words, they should have said to Julia ahead of time, "now don't say anything other than what's on the teleprompter", yet, it was ok for other presenters to make comments.

Meaning extranious comments, take Paul Rudd repeatedly saying he needed corrective eye surgery because he couldn't read the teleprompter, etc.

Julia's damned either way. If she hadn't showed up to present, most of you would be saying it's sour grapes because she didn't get nominated. She can't win.

That was an impromptu cover for a slip-up. Julia's was her own little COMMENT and there is no comparison. I believe one should respect the people who are getting the awards, give them their moment in the sun. Obviously there are those who don't see it that way.
I'm glad she showed up.

I think it was a sincere attempt at grace and humility that inadvertantly showed an attitude of superiority and separation. The words "you people" were especially unfortunate. It was nice of her to try any sort of a compliment considering how she's been raked over the coals, but it definitely could have been done more eloquently.

I thought that was very humble of her. She gets it now. And I think that as an actor, I would've felt good to hear a star like Julia Roberts give me a compliment like that and know that she recognizes where the real talent in the entertainment industry lies.

"One day, when you are getting an award and someone starts making comments I know you will be all 'Shut up bitch!'"

When they are sincerely complimenting the talent of the Broadway community in less than two seconds? No, I doubt I would not be that petty, impatient or rude, especially when it's the presenter. It's part of the gig. Julia's intro was abot a tenth as long as most of them and the one ad-libbed sentence had more sincerity and integrity than most of the scripted comments robotically read from the teleprompters.

Honestly guys, I think you're trying desperately to see something that simply wasn't there.

I think she meant it as she is realizing, after her first time on Broadway, that it's not as easy as people say it is.
