It kind of sounded like, "Wow, I always thought Broadway was a joke and you people were all losers cuz you couldn't get into film...but then I came here and realized you people are really talented! Who knew?"
I agree, Addy. She had no idea how tough doing eight shows a week was until she was actually doing it herself. She probably didn't think it would be THAT difficult and she was just giving credit to all the hardworking Broadway actors. She probably also didn't think the critics were going to be as harsh as they were. It's a tough business and Julia was just pointing that out.
i really hate it when the person giving out the award makes the moment about themselves and their comments. it takes away from the moment and julia is the QUEEN of that... take a back seat for once and give respect to others in a way that does not draw attention to yourself.
I think it was very gracious. After being so trashed by the critics, she certainly didn't need to show up to present at all, and I think it was nice of her to acknowledge the talent in the room. I agree that she seems to have been wowed by how difficult stage work is and the talent it takes to pull it off. I didn't have much of an opinion one way or another of her before her stint on Broadway, but I now have a lot of respect for her.
I hate how people are turning this into "She was making the moment about herself." She wasn't. I think it was a gracious statement, and, like others have said, I think she just didn't realize how much it took to perform in a show 8 times a week and she was just giving credit to all those are hardworking actors now that she sees how difficult it is.
Ugghhy..Julia always finds a way to make everything about her. Every times she presents an award she decides to ad lib something to extend her time on stage. Bleh. Go away.
Yes, but she didn't have to do it onstage during what might be the highlite of someone elses life or career. There is no blight of media outlets willing to cover any remark she might wish to make. But did she have to make it then? How about the "I love my life!" remarks at the Oscars? Really, put a sock in it.
"i really hate it when the person giving out the award makes the moment about themselves and their comments. it takes away from the moment and julia is the QUEEN of that... take a back seat for once and give respect to others in a way that does not draw attention to yourself."
ABSOLUTELY correct!!! Julia IS the Queen of the "me me me" moment. When she awarded the "Best Actor" Oscar to Denzel Washington, after she opened the envelope and before she said his name she said "I love my life!" - making the moment all about Julia and shouldn't we all be happy that Julia's life is wonderful because her buddy Denzel won an Oscar. And at some other awards show, maybe the Oscars or Golden Globes, before she announced the award she did a shout out to her nanny for her birthday. She's such a nasty famewhore.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Dustin Hoffman show up to present the year he was not nominated for "Merchant of Venice"? So it's no big deal.
And the phrase "You people..." is so derogatory. It's like she just realized there are people who work their asses off eight shows a week who all have the talent to be stars but won't because of luck, timing, etc. Gah, she's a moron.
Julia started the statement by saying "you people" and then followed up with "you are all very talented people." I think some (members of the theatre community) could take offense to the choice of words. By saying "you people" it creates an us/them mentality. Sort of like when a racist person refers to people of color as "you people". It can feel like an unflattering comparison or even putting Julia herself in a different category. I believe Julia was sincere, but some people might not have liked how she expressed herself or the venus she chose to do it. She could have been more articulate-she's an actress for gosh sakes. She could have referred to the audience as "the theatre community" or something like that.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
That's EXACTLY how I thought of it. I took it as 'not everyone is cut out to do Broadway' and it's 'a tough job to do'. These movie people think the only prime time shows & movie actors deserve to be called 'actors'. They forget about Broadway/off-Broadway & even daytime actors.
Totally...like she's bestowing her approval upon the Broadway community. She and Oprah both need to stuff it and stop thinking the world revolves around them.
She did the same thing when she was presenting a Golden Globe for Best Director back when Traffic was out. She made some dumb comment about how she knew Soderbergh should win because she was sure her opinion was gold, then was humiliated when Ang Lee won. Seriously...go away. She made Benjamin Bratt follow her around like a puppy dog while her Oscar Nomination was on the table and wouldn't admit to their split because she was too afraid of how the negative publicity would affect her chances of winning. So sick of her and her one dimensional "talent."
I thought she said "you people are insanely talented"
To me, I would have preferred her to have been more demure in the moment and less "Erin Brockovich." My goodness, you're wearing an evening gown and you're all coiffured. Could you not have taken five minutes to say the same thing but more eloquently?

I was someone elses moment. Period. That's the point. Theater's biggest night about those who are winning awards in the theater. Who cares what she thinks or who hears it? It was not appropriate.
I believe she was very gracious as well. The fact that she showed up and presented was huge in my mind. When you are in Hollywood, and you do a project that gets bad reviews - it is different - chances are you are already on a new project and moving on. On Broadway however - you get bad notes on opening night and you have to show up the next day, and for eight performances a week for four or five months. That is incredibly humbling, and I think Ms. Roberts showed a lot of class last night - and looked lovely doing it as well.
am i the only one who was deeply offended by him taking the opportunity to make this all about himself with that unecessary conjuction? i mean who does he thinh he is? golly, just because he wasn't up for anything this year is no reason to attack those who were with such callousness! i'm sick of the presenters making these awards shows about them and think it's high time that the presenters be replaced with animatronic versions of william shatner!
