Just got home. Let me preface by saying this. WEST SIDE STORY is a masterpiece, and tonight was no exception. The cast was on fire (minus one) and Karen being out did not deter my overall enjoyment of the show. My parents still loved it, and my dad, who isn't the biggest musical theater fan to begin with, said he can't wait to go see it again.

Josefina and Matt were perfect tonight. I love their chemistry and both of their voices. Matt was in perfect voice with "Maria" and "Somethings Comin'" and Josefina's "Hoy Me Siento Tan Hermosa" was as good (if not better) than the previous four times I saw it.

That being said, Karen's understudy, Yanira Marin, was truly awful, and it made me appreciate Karen's Anita even more (I would not have voted for her to win the Tony Award). While it is a fact that Karen cannot dance the role, Yanira cannot dance, act or sing the role! "America" was even more lackluster than I had remembered it, and one of the girls even stepped out of formation for a split second. The audience of mostly tourists didn't seem to care though, and still went crazy after the number was over. "A Boy Like That" was horrendous. Yanira was pretty much yelling the song, and it just didn't work at all. Also, the rape scene did not pack a punch like when Karen is acting in it. Yanira screamed her songs, yet could not let out any blood curling screams during the rape scene...I was so disappointed.

Karen, I don't know where the f*** you were tonight, but get you a** back to the Palace soon. Even if you were slightly ill, you should have been there to revel in your first performance as a Tony-winning actress. Lin Manuel Miranda was sick last year for the Tuesday performance after the Tony Awards, and he still went on. I was so looking forward to cheering you on tonight for your tony-winning performance, and unfortunately for me, I did not get to. (sorry if this seems a bit harsh, but i was very upset that she was out)

Maybe Carrie Fisher is involved. You just know Debbie was incensed that Carrie showed up looking like that.
