Katy Perry saw KINKY BOOTS today and she tweeted about it to her 35.8 million followers...
"Just saw KINKY BOOTS on broadway & cried w/joy from it's powerful, beautiful message. Congrats on every of its deserved 13 Tony nominations"
then she tweeted
" AND if Billy Porter doesn't win the Tony for best actor in a musical… There will be words… Trust"
I agree with Katy Perry. On both counts.
And let me add that if Annaleigh Ashford steals the Tony away from Victoria Clark and Andrea Martin, I'll be surprised-but-not-surprised.
^That would be highway robbery. I would be shocked and upset if Ashford, who is giving a serviceable but far from excellent performance, beat out the brilliance that is Andrea Martin in Pippin.
Cried from joy? STFU, Katy Perry.
I think Kinky and Porter will both win!
I think Kinky Boots is going to give some contenders a run for their money....
I liked Kinky. I liked Porter. Quite a bit for both. NO WAY Ashford deserves the Tony Award over Martin.
Also to Perry: why is every thought bubble any celebrity publishes considered newsworthy? Oy. Also, unless she's see the other nominees (at least SOME of them) it's ridiculous to make that statement.
I daresay that nearly every nom is "worthy" of being awarded but its not just about that...its in comparison to all the performances.
(That being said, I would love it if he did win, but I don't think that would happen)

Maybe Katy Perry has seen other nominees. Who knows. Either way, she was obviously blown away and is giving her opinion. As for the news-worthiness... It's Katy Perry. She just told 35.8 million people what she thought of KINKY BOOTS. Pretty amazing the power of social media!

Pretty amazing indeed. She loved it enough to take a stand and say so. I have to agree with her...It's not that it's a show without flaws but some shows are bogged down by flaws, and Kinky Boots just sails right over theirs.
Katy Perry's comments are pretty good unexpected PR...in all liklihood, they will get some people that normally don't go to the theater to go see Kinky Boots. That's really good for the entire Broadway community in the long run.

Very well said! I may borrow that, Kathy! ;-}
Yes, the free publicity is wonderful for Kinky, no doubt. But it's not a newsworthy statement.
She didn't take a "stand"; She had an opinion. (Will there be an uprising when/if he doesn't win?) I will never understand why the media (and the public) think a celebritie's opinion are so very important. (I could see the production and Porter himself feeling great about it, of course.) Her saying it doesn't make it any more "true" than you or I saying it.
(Note: I'm not knocking her opinion, or her ability to make it, either.)

It's newsworthy only because we live in a celebrity culture and good or bad, everything that celebrities say or do become newsworthy. That doesn't make her opinion more valuable than anyone elses - and like with anything else, different things appeal to different people.
Regardless, Katy Perry's gazillion twitter followers - the most of which probably never saw a Broadway show - are now being told that something on Broadway is wonderful and meaningful. If even a small percentage of those people go to the theater because of Katy's statements, then I again say good for the theater community at large - whether or not you are a Kinky Boots fan.
Oh and thanks Joe. I am not quoted all that often..LOL

Oh, dramamamamamama, don't be such pill.
I wasn't quoting you. You never say anything much worth quoting. I was quoting Kathy.

Isn't the reason her views are getting attention the same that everyone else's views on this board are getting attention? Social media.
In her case, of course, she has made a choice to reveal her identity. Obviously, her talent gives her a big fan base.
But social media gives us all a platform for discussion.
