I've also seen some of the rehearsals this week. I saw the show in Chicago, and I find it much more entertaining/logical/easy to follow in its current form. Even with the disjointed nature of the tech process, the individual sections look great and I really think it'll come together into a coherent whole. For the most part, I really enjoy the new songs (of which there are quite a few) and nothing has been cut that didn't need to go.
I don't know the exact numbers for the advance, but I know tickets have been selling VERY well and I wouldn't be surprised if the $14 million figure were actually pretty accurate.

MissAnne -- I couldn't disagree more. I would be so sad if they cut Fester's moon song. The song is a simple one, yes, but coupled with the visual, it's one of the most beautifully simple and touching moments I've seen on a Broadway stage in a long time. Also feels like one of the most Addams-esque moments. I very much hope it's still in.
As for "Crazier Than You", yeah, I could see ditching that song. But if they don't ditch it, at least flesh it out a bit more. It was a bit of repetitive one-trick pony in Chicago and didn't tell a story. Just chorus after chorus and half the time they were playing fully front to the audience and not to each other. They do need a song to resolve the Wednesday-Lucas conflict, though, so they either need to make it better or write something new.

I loved the moon song when I saw the show in Chicago! I know it's silly, but it made me smile. (and tear up a bit...) It was definitely one of my favorite moments in the show, and Kevin Chamberlain played in beautifully. I'm headed to NYC this weekend to catch the first preview (thank you, spring break!), and am really looking forward to seeing what changes they have made.

Posted: 3/6/10 at 9:13pmAhhhh! My friend was able to sneak us into the invited dress!! (she was a PA in Chicago) We are at intermission right now, and I couldn't contain myself -- so far it if everything that I loved about the show in Chicago and more. I'll let you know how I feel after the second act....but so far, WOW! There has been a complete transformation, and the whole audience seems to be enjoying. Okay, they are flickering the lights...more after the show. :)

Posted: 3/6/10 at 10:01pmI passed by the Lunt-Fontanne today and could not figure out why there were such long lines out the door, when I didn't think the previews started until later. I'm here for the whole week. Anyone have any idea how I could get tickets? Would there be returned tickets this early? Probably no rush. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to try to catch it.

Okay...just got back to the hotel. And am in a state of complete bliss. :) I don't want to give anything away because I know people are going to see the show this week, but I will say a few things. Right off the bat, there is a new opening number. It is a lot more funny and playful than the original Clandango number, and it introduces the role of the anscestors. There were some complaints about the ancestors in Chicago, but they work much better now and are more integrated in the show. Also, the Wednesday/Lucas story line has been adjusted -- I think that the way they deal with each set of parents' and the real definition of "normal" works really well and that it comes across beautifully in the revisions. I really loved the show!! Haven't been this excited about a new show in a loong time! I'm going back for the preview on Monday and can't wait to see it again. I know that I wasn't the only person who loved it -- there was a crazy standing ovation at the end! The final number had barely finished before people started to stand up cheering.
As for the run time, I truthfully lost track of when exactly the show ended. I was out in the lobby checking out all the different people there. The show started at 7:30 and I turned my phone on afterward at about 10:30 -- so it's less than 3 hours. :) It was a great night -- not too long and not too short. Just right!

No offense, but it was an invited dress. The audience was mostly friends, family, and people connected to the production. Of course they'd go nuts. The invited dress is as much a confidence booster for the cast as it is an actual dress rehearsal.

#47LATEST Addams Family thoughts?
Posted: 3/7/10 at 12:19amI was there tonight too and have to agree with lulu. The show has definately changed a lot since I saw it in Chicago. It still needs some cutting here and there but, things are more clear, tight and the new songs add a bit of flavor to the characters. It has really come together and will do very well in NYC. And no, I am not a shill as most of you know.

Was also there tonight. I don't really want to make detailed comments as it's still a dress rehearsal, but even though I saw it in Chicago and was pretty ambivalent about it there, I had a grin on my face the whole time tonight. A few obvious things to be smoothed over (mostly technical), and a couple more cuts that could stand to be made, but overall I really, really enjoyed what feels like a brand-new show.
The audience response was fantastic - as can be expected from an invited dress, adamgreer rightly points out. I believe most of the laughs were genuine, even if the applause might have been over the top, and hopefully they'll come from paying audiences as well.

Posted: 3/7/10 at 1:47amI can't add anything to the comments on the invited dress but I just found out tonight that besides the tickets I already have for 4/18, I'm being taken by my oldest theatre friend to see the first preview on Monday night (yay!). So I'll try to take copious notes and report back on new material, changes from Chicago, running time etc. Based on the comments above, though, I'm quite encouraged that they've taken a show that I thought was already quite good (if not great) in Chicago and made it even better.
