Will they award a legend who just won last year but has returned to Sondheim or a past winner who is giving a scene stealing, knockout performance in a troubled show? I think this will be a tough one to call. My gut tells me Finneran has the edge. Thoughts?

Does this really require yet another thread.
My money's still on Lansbury, though. She deserves it more than Finneran, who was fine for the 20 minutes she had onstage.

I'm gonna still go with Lansbury purely because this is probably her final go at Broadway and the sentimentality factor is too good to pass up, but I'd love to see Finneran take it and she injects some much-needed excitement into the race.
The two categories to watch this year are Actress (Cook v. Scott v. Zeta-Jones, a showdown for the ages) and Featured Actor, which can't even seem to pin down a leading contender. (Is it Vincent, whose role, like him, is thin and underdeveloped? Is it de Jesus, whose campy Tony bait is love-it or despise-it? Is it Chamberlin, whose show nearly drove the Broadway community to chase it away with pitchforks? Or Steggert, whose show closed five months ago and probably has a nomination waiting for him next year?)

Why is this worth bringing up again in a separate thread? Because it ended so well last time? And by last time, I mean three days ago.

Adamgreer, please DO NOT post anything pro Night Music/Lansbury. You will be accused of having money in the show!

PiraguaGuy2 - If those are indeed the nominations for Best Featured Actor, I think that the award would go to Tony Vincent. I cannot see them giving the award to any of the others.
Edit: My money is on Finneran. Tony voters aren't known to vote for performances for sentimental reasons. They are pretty good (and pretty consistent) with voting for the best performances. That is not to say that Lansbury would only win for sentimental reasons - that has just been one of the main arguments brought up on the board, that she would win because this is her last chance.

Though isn't that what the thinking was last year as well?
Either way, I think they're both fantastic and highly deserving. It's going to be a very tight race.

Steggert brought a lot more depth to his role than Tony Vincent did, because Steggert had a better role to begin with. I'd give the award to Steggert, Aaron Lazar, or even Norm Lewis ahead of Tony Vincent.

I agree 100%. Tony Vincent's performance in AI was actually the only performance in the show that I disliked. I'd love to see Stark Sands get a nod, although I doubt it'll happen.

Posted: 4/25/10 at 10:59pmSteggert was great in Ragtime but I doubt that majority of the viewers saw his performance. The majority of the voters also don't go and see all the shows - just the ones up for the big awards (Best Musical/Play, Best Revival Musical/Play). That could really hurt any chances Chamberlin and Norm Lewis have at winning assuming that Addams and SOS aren't nominated for Best Musical.

No, no Ljay, YOU have money in Night Music and Greer is head of the Lansbury Mafia!

Nice to see maturity is alive and well on BWW.
And I agree, ljay. The only people from ADDAMS who TRULY deserve nominations are Nathan Lane and Jackie Hoffman. They both manage to wring genuine laughs out of the terrible book.

For Best Featured Actor I would bet on: Tony Vincent, Bobby Steggert, Aaron Lazar, Levi Kreis, and Christopher Fitzgerald. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stark Sands sneak in over Lazar or Fitzgerald. None of the performances in the category are particularly exciting this year.

My fingers are still crossed for Christopher Fitzgerald who gave an utterly charming performance in Finian's Rainbow. Team Finian!
The chance to make history with bestowing an actor with a record sixth Tony Award seems almost irresistible. Lansbury still has the edge.
