Featured Actress in a Musical:Finneran or Lansbury?

Maybe they can tie and our respective mafias can live in perfect harmony to the tune of a Bernstein tune that I'm sure we'll spend hours arguing about when choosing it and start a whole new gang war.

there are a lot of actors who have won or been nominated for twenty minutes. (moreso in movies perhaps) quality over quantity. it is just that they both have quality.

I know this won't happen, but wouldn't we all have a huge laugh if someone other than Finneran or Lansbury won? Then we'd all be the fool

The chance to make history with bestowing an actor with a record sixth Tony Award seems almost irresistible. Lansbury still has the edge.

In 2007 they had the opportunity to give Hal Prince his 22nd Tony Award. Not only did he not win, they didn't even nominate him. Same goes for John McMartin.

In the past ten years actors such as, Christopher Plummer, Phillip Bosco, Paul Newman, Chita Rivera, Vanessa Redgrave, Rosemary Harris, John Cullum, Jim Dale, Alan Alda, and Angela Lansbury, who might have won the award for "sentimental" reasons have all lost. Many said that Deuce would be Lansbury's last stage appearance and that she would win because of that. She still lost. And she came back twice. I would never look to the Tony's to vote an actor/actress for sentimental reasons. They have never had a good track record with that.

My money's still on Lansbury, though. She deserves it more than Finneran, who was fine for the 20 minutes she had onstage.

As opposed to the 20 minutes Angela is onstage? Lol. Don't get me wrong, I still think Angela takes it. I just think it's funny that you make it sound like Angela has so much more stage time than Katie.

John McMartin has 21 Tony Awards?

No, he has zero. But I am assuming/hoping that you know that and are just choosing to be snarky/witty instead of smart.

But he falls into the same category of Hal Prince as a possible "sentimental vote" that failed to get a nomination for what could have been his last chance.

Point is, there is no such thing as the sentimental vote. If there was Peter O'Toole would have won an Oscar for Venus.

I'd say Angela's Tony last year was sentimentality. Also, with Finneran seemingly being Angie's only competition, I'd think they'd pick the good, sentimental performance over a good performance in a poor production. Doesn't help that Finneran already has a Tony. If she didn't have one, she'd pull the well-liked stage veteran without a Tony card. Bad reviews for Promises could also bring Finneran down. Seeing these reviews make me think it won't even be nominated for Best Revival. Certainly doesn't help her chances of winning.

I have no problems with Angela winning for Blithe Spirit. If I were a voting member of the Tony Awards, I would have cast my ballot for Hallie Foote, but Angela having won last year doesn't bother me in the least. That said, Angela's presence in Night Music does not warrant another Tony, in my humble opinion. It's a great role in which she, unfortunately, isn't that great. Again, just my opinion. Ditto CZJ.

Angela has won a slew of (deserved) Tonys. Should she win another just for being Angela?
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

On one hand I'd say the performance in the better production usually has the edge; on the other hand, Finneran's performance is likely to be fresher in voter's minds (I think that helped Karen Olivo last year).

I would think that the bad reviews for Finneran would contribute more to a win for Lansbury than the sentimental factor.

Looking over the nominees in her category last year (Hallie Foote, Jessica Hynes
Marin Ireland, Amanda Root) I really believe that Lansbury was delivering the best performance.

Edit: The only other possible winner I could have seen winning is Hallie Foote. Although I still think Lansbury delivered the better performance.

Then wouldn't Will Swenson have won over Greg Jbara?

Both were great, but Gwynne did win a couple of major awards leading up to the Tonys, so I bet it was close. I really think opening later in the season helped her a lot. And also that some voters probably thought voting B.E. three acting Tonys was a bit much.

I feel that Hallie Foote's performance was much the best. If Angela Lansbury wins this year, I feel it will be much more deserving than last year.

I also would say that Dividing the Estate closing early in the season contributed more to Lansbury's win than the sentimental factor. I think that the sentimental factor is not as prevalent as most believe.

Count me in on Hallie Foote as well. That was a unique comedic performance.

I enjoyed Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit - she was much better than the production itself - but I would have even preferred Amanda Root from the Norman Conquests over her too last year.

The win for Greg Jbara, as much as I love him, was clearly a sentimental vote. He is super well-liked in the theatre community. I did think he deserved it, but I won't deny it had to do with his good relations in the theatre community over the years.

Olivo's win over Gwynne was probably close, closer than people like to admit. Olivo's presence in the community helped her for sure. Gwynne seemed like the odd one out in terms of the potential winners from Billy: Jbara had sentimentality and the boys had history-in-the-making. Gwynne was the British visitor no one really knew.

MrMusic, I know we will always disagree on this lol.

I knew Olivo secured the Tony the second both Brantley and Isherwood stated she "should and would win" the award. I just had a feeling from there on that the tables were turning.

Haha, yes, ljay, we will always disagree about this. But you can't deny the fact that Gwynne had won the "precursor" awards leading up to the Tonys. What had Olivo won before the Tony? Critics' opinions are one thing; voting trends are another. You can't fault someone for predicting Gwynne to win over Olivo last year, no matter what the critics of the New York Times say. Their job is not to prognosticate; it's to have an opinion.
