Part of me thinks this music is more beautiful than the original Phantom of the Opera. Ramin's voice is so smooth and beautiful. Sierra looks gorgeous, and much older! I pre-ordered the $40 cast album! I am so excited!!!
wow.. I listened to Till I Hear your voice... and I have to say I thought it was beautiful... if the rest of the score is that good I know I'm gonna love this..
I have a feeling, and people will think I'm mad, I will go into that theatre and be completely blown away by the music and the spectacle and the naysayers will be on the forums that night back-peddling! LOL, in all honesty, I think it will be alright musically at least. It seems to be very pretty but it's nothing earth-shattering. I think if Sondheim did a sequel to "Sweeney Todd" it wouldn't be earth-shattering either, even if the musical was beyond excellent which most of the original is, IMO.
Who can explain it, who can tell you why?

I actually like the song that Ramin sings. But then I'm admittedly a sucker for ballads.

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
I also hate the artwork but the music is gorgeous. I really hope this flies in London and we do get a chance to enjoy it in New York. I can see a totally Phantom weekend!

I'm a nay-sayer, and I was not (SURPRISE!) blown away by either the "Coney Island Waltz" or the Phantom ballad. The waltz is pretty at the beginning and gets appropriately creepy later, but I don't think it comes close to the "Carousel Waltz" from CAROUSEL. I hate the scream at the end.
Ramin has a a beautiful voice, and the ballad is a nice ALW ballad. How do you think it compares to "Music of the Night," the Phantom ballad from the original show?
I think "Til l Hear You Sing" is pretty generic ALW and not outstanding.
From the positive comments I've read, it looks like a lot of people will be buying tickets in the near future. Whether it has the legs ALW hopes for it will, of course, depend on a lot of people liking what they see and hear and positive word of mouth.
Annas--it's at the end of the video if you go to the website and watch the press preview from this morning.
The opening music does indeed sound like a slightly creepier variation on "The Carousel Waltz." I thought "Till I Here You Sing" was an okay song, and well-executed by Mr. Karimloo. However, it struck as very Disney-esque, as did he. I think that there's a big problem with having the Phantom just being onstage alone singing an "I'm so lonely and I miss you" power ballad. It's part of the reason why I don't like the Yeston-Kopit "Phantom," because the Phantom loses all of his mystery, scariness and coolness when you just have him onstage pouring his heart out from the very top of the show. Part of the reason why ALW's "Phantom" works so well is it's construction. You don't even see him until half an hour into the show, and even then, you don't get a really satsifactory dose of him until the final lair scene. Even the whole title song/Music of the Night/Stranger Than You Dreamt It sequence is still pretty mysterious. If in the sequel the first thing the Phantom does is sing this song, he's going to just be another tenor leading man with his heart on his sleeve (who just happens to wear a weird half-mask).
"I know there are some holes to the plot and plot points we've heard about"
That's not the real issue. The issue is that there's a massive hole at the very heart of the story. As someone else on this board said very well (sorry, I can't remember who), it completely messes up the premise, characters, and story of the first one. And say what you will, some of us love that story.
Ok! Just listened to "Till I hear you sing once more" and let me just say... BEAUTIFUL! This is what gives me hope for this show... If the score reflects this song... Then Andrew has another hit on his hands!

Good point. I don't think the Phantom in this show will be any more mysterious than the one in the 2004 movie---although he does sing better.
We don't know when this song appears in the show yet, but it does seem likely that it will serve to introduce the Phantom and his problem (to those who have been living on another planet for twenty years).
I'm definitely buying the album and seeing the show, if only for Ramin. He's been my stage crush for a while. (My last three avatars have all been of him in different shows. Currently it's him as Enjolras in Les Mis.) Amazing voice, great acting, very pretty, and a super nice guy.
I also love his Canadian accent, but that's just a weird preference of mine, LOL.
I love the track! Although the artwork reminds me of something for a "Halloween" movie.

For those who have pre-ordered the cast recording, is the preview track any different from the one that you get when you subscribe to the newsletter? (I.e. the waltz)
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
