La La Land

The chords are the same and the whole "I think I'll be the one to make that call. You're right, I'd never fall for you at all" is the same melody.

Mr. Nowack said:But of course most of the oh-so-insightful queens who bash the movie have never even heard of those movies.

If you're implying that one needs to see those two movies in order to form an informed opinion of La La Land, I don't see it. If anything, familiarity with them makes it easier to bash LLL, since they're much better movies (well, Young Girls is; I'm not a fan of Umbrellas).

La La Land

eh, i don't really see too much theft from the Demy musicals, besides the ending of Umbrellas being similar. Okay there's color...other movies also use color.

@hork don't clutch those pearls too tightly haha.

I was just saying that quite a few people I know who disliked the movie act as if they are ultimate authorities on either films or musicals or both, but in fact have limited knowledge.

I do think a major part of enjoying La La Land is getting all the references and influences though. For me that's the entire purpose of the movie. It's not everyone's cup of tea and everyone doesn't have to like it but that's what it is.

La La Land

I recorded it on my DVR from HBO recently and watched it, I will say that on a technical level (directing, editing, cinematography, production/costume design, chorography etc.) it's an extremely well made movie musical that actually takes advantage of the genre's inherent fantastical nature. Emma Stone certainly earned her Oscar and I can see why a good amount of people really enjoyed this movie when it came out. But I will say the story and characters are where the movie falters quite a bit that does kind of bring down the film as a whole for me, honestly Moonlight winning Best Picture was the right move for that one has a stronger screenplay and much better developed characters.

But that doesn't mean La La Land is a bad movie, far from it, but it isn't perfect. That being said I'm very excited for Damien Chazelle's upcoming Babylon film that's coming out next year, starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Li Jun Li as Douglas Fairbanks, Clara Bow and Anna May Wong respectfully.
