It would be so much easier to take Republicans seriously if they didn't operate in a fantasy world. There are fair critiques to be made of Obama, but stuff like that is ridiculous.

I simply disagree. Barack was not even well known in a single state until late 2004. He went from an absolute nobody to "president" within 4 short years. Media fawned over him and we still do not know about large portions of his life. At least the current President has been a nationally known figure with nowhere to hide since the 70's. Sorry but in 2008 its absolutely absurd that we elected someone who wasn't even known on 9/11/01.

^B!tch, Wtf are you even talking about?!?!?!?!?

Are you suggesting, even in the slightest, that Obama had something to do with 9/11?

Maybe a silly question: where is the full interview? Has it not been released yet, or was it pulled off Broadway.com?

will be absolutely thrilled to hear the new york theatre crowd speak their voice about current politics at the Tony Awards

not....

talking to the choir is easy, which is what the tonys viewing audience is

Patti-put your wallet where you mouth is with major donations and/or start doing benefit concerts for congressional candidates in possible swing seats for 2018 so you can actually make a difference with your name and talents.....

I can't find it either - and it looks like it might have been pulled off YouTube? (someone linked me to the full interview I believe and the link doesn't work anymore).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I think that some people are forgetting that the nature of theatre is to discuss political and social issues. If you'd like an evening free politics and social issues I suggest you stay home and keep your TV turned off. Definitely don't see Sweat, Oslo, Indecent, Hamilton, A Doll's House Part 2, Kinky Boots, The Little Foxes, Wicked..........

Actually, it would have been absolutely absurd in 2008 if we had elected a hot tempered, self centered, and admitted economic ignoramus with a philandering past, instead of Obama. A lot is made of the media fawning over Barack Obama, but the fact is that he won the nomination because he was not Hillary Clinton, and he won the election because he was not John McCain. To many voters, he was a charismatic, relatively unknown "none of the above".

The fact that Trump has been engaged in a full time self promotion campaign for forty years is not necessarily a positive. He spent thirty years bragging about his sexual prowess, and then followed up during the last ten years by offering himself as scientific evidence that it is indeed possible to "f*** one's brains out". Sure, all that makes him famous, but not in a good way.

It is inevitable that politics will will inject itself into the Tony Awards. The degree to which that happens can be controlled to some extent, but it cannot be prevented, because there are those who will perceive the most benign event as politically motivated, and they will offer a political response.

Uh huh, But Obama turned out to be a wonderful, excellent President of the United States. He was always honest with us, and scandal free. Whereas Trump every time he opens up his mouth a lie comes out. Obama was the epitome of class and decency. Trump is nothing but classless white trash with money.

Obama was among the best Presidents we ever had. He bathed the White House in rainbow colors the day gay marriage was upheld. Trump is the absolutely worst we ever had, and he hates gay people.

I'm sure the state of Illinois knew who he was.

"He went from an absolute nobody to "president" within 4 short years."

Do US senators count as being "absolute nobodies" now? And before then he was a community organizer, a law professor, and a state senator, but I guess that's not as prestigious as hosting a reality show.

"Media fawned over him and we still do not know about large portions of his life."

He has multiple memoirs. Literally two movies about his early life came out in the past year. There are countless news articles and profiles. WTF more do you need to know?

Really cute dog-whistling here, but I'll address the most ridiculous part of your comment: the idea that it's better to have a president who is "well know" than a president who is competent. Apparently, pointing at people on TV and telling them they're fired makes someone more qualified to run a country than someone with actual government experience... and a working knowledge of the Constitution, a command of the English language, etc.

Also, to the people who are annoyed with Patti for talking about Trump or politics, it's not like she brought the subject up in the interview. Paul Wontorek asked her for her honest opinion and she, being the gloriously candid dame she is, gave him just that.

Ben's speech hasn't been "his speech" recently. It'll be interesting to see whether Ben will continue this very carefully and deliberately crafted PR speech or give everyone a little bit of himself.

"

I haven't heard any of his speeches - before or after the intense spotlight starting shining on him.  In what way is it differing, and how would his PR speech be really any different than what he would say on his own? I'm seriously interested as I love his performance so much but I really don't know anything about him except his father and stage presence.

And kudos to Patti!!  I love it when entertainers drop their filters.... not knowing if she ever had a filter... but she's so real and over the top theatrical  - not afraid to speak her mind.  Love her so much :)

"Using a platform like an acceptance speech to voice your anger and frustration is a rare opportunity. Saying nothing is far more deadly. Since threats have been made against the arts by this administration, it would be irresponsible to stay silent."

Performers want to use their voice to express frustration is their choice but as a person watching a show for entertainment I really don't need an entire evening of anti-Trump acceptance speeches. I get it that they despise the man and his policies but I can hear the same thing on many other TV programs. Like I said in earlier post, this has been done at all the other award shows in 2017 so anything said by Ms. LuPone or others I highly doubt will be much different  than was said at these other award shows. Maybe I will hit the mute button when it comes to the speeches - lol.

Nobody is more responsible for Donald Trump's Presidency than BARACK OBAMA. He drove the car for 8 years and Trump was the destination. Barack voters (I voted against him 3 separate times) put their hopes and dreams onto someone not even as well known as Sutton Foster in 2008. Barack let all of these people down big time. Had he done what he said he'd do we wouldn't be where we are today.

It's clear to me that the people who voted for Barack are refusing to place even the tiniest bit of blame on him. They must feel that they are responsible for giving so much responsibility to someone who wasn't even well known in his own state until late 2004. When you vote for nobodies who don't have the skills needed it leads to this.

There is nobody more to blame than Barack and the people who voted for him.

Pretty sure you can equally blame, if not more, the republicans and the 6 years they held congress during obamas 8 years. They were to blame for making such gridlock in the legislature and not even trying to cooperate with the POTUS and democrats.

Thats the thing. Someone with a lifetime of experience in the public eye could have done a better job reaching out and working with the other side. Nobody in congress *trusted* Barack, even when he held a filibuster proof majority. And why should they? While they were serving the country on 9/11/01 - nobody had even heard of Barack. It's simply not a job for a newcomer. Just as I think Bush was responsible for leading us to those dark Barack years (and W's approval rating with Republicans shows GOP voters hold their own responsible when they fail, unlike Dems) the current state of American politics is the result of Barack's "leadership."

Patti LuPone and other leftists should seriously look inward and hold their own responsible or they will continue making the same mistakes and will ultimately never be happy.
