When you aren't making your nut, nearly any cost is a lot.
Maybe they're hoping a cast album will get more people interested once they hear the music? It seems like Sting's concept album should have done that already if that was going to make a difference though.
Most shows get a recording. If they're hoping to have a life in regional theater, touring, etc. they'll want a cast album. Helps promote the show.
AKarp2013 where did you get the December release date? Looking forward to the recording, but I cannot find anything on-line about its release.

The December date came from Amazon. Amazon can be wrong, I would wait for an official release about the date before we get excited about December 16th.
