Love your avatar, Muhlethaler!
Beggar Woman instead, if she's too old for Johanna?

She's far too young for the Beggar Woman, opposite Depp as Sweeney.
I don't really see her as Johanna. Makeup can age her, anyway. She has a beautiful voice, so it's not like it's a horrible thing if she's involved in this movie.

I wonder what Cameron Mc thinks of Laura in anything.
I don't see her as Johanna, but keep in mind for the film there will be other characters, including flashbacks.
MichaelBennet, could you give us a little more information on what you mean by flashbacks? Would this refer to his career as a barber before he was sent off to prison or getting married ect...

Given the fact that she was named with the other principals, she just might be Johanna. If she were a minor character, I doubt she would be listed. Cool.
If she is in the film, that's fantastic. She's a great talent and we won't have to worry about any freaky singing from her. I'd perfer to see her as Johanna, however I still think Anne Hathaway must have her foot in the door for the role. She sang Kiss Me at a Sondheim benifit, she's stated that her hero is Sondheim and she also stated that she really, really wants to work with Tim Burton. Hint, hint. Laura and Anne look similar, maybe mother daughter perhaps?
Just as long as Emmy Rossum stays far away from this production.

I too think she would be fabulous. She is really an up and coming talent who I see growing to be a great actress. I'm curious as to when these comments were made. Were they all made at the Sondheim benefit or were these all on separate occassions?
Having LMK as Johanna's mother in flashbacks and Anne Hathaway as Johanna would work well in my opinion, but if LMK is playing Johanna (and really, would she be "laying down tracks" if she's just playing a character in a flashback?) then I bet she'll be wonderful.
Three comments/questions.
1.) Anne Hathaway? what has she sung in? sorry I don't realy know her background. Did anyoner hear her sing at the end of Ella Enchanted? I wasnn't impressed.
2.) Anne Hathaway looked horrible as a blonde (Didn't anyone see Brokeback mountain?)
3.) What's wrong with Emmy Rossum? I loved her in phantom.

Maybe LMK is dubbing someone.
Has Tobias been announced yet?
If you go to this site you can hear her some of the other singing she's done. The clip of her on Ellen and the audio clips in particular. http://www.annie-hathaway.com/download.php
I think the way she looked as a blonde in Brokeback Mountain had more to do with the hair style than the color.
As for Emmy Rossum, the especially high notes in her upper register aren't extremely clear, at least not in Phantom.

Anne Hathaway would be a MARVELOUS Johanna! She is so talented, and as said earlier, up and coming. this would be great for her.
BUT LMK would be good too :)

I think, if this is true, she will be fine. As for her not being fifteen, well not many teenagers are played by teenagers anyway in movies or tv, or on stage for that matter. I don't recall ever seeing a teenaged Joanna before on stage and it has always been believeable.
Stage and film are two ENTIRELY differents mediums.
What's believable on stage may not be believable on film.

Women in her late 20s have played Johanna on stage (how much was Joslyn when she was in the national tour?). I am sure they will try to get someone much closer to 15 to tackle the role, perhaps an unknown. Anne Hathaway would be a great choice in my opinion but she might already register as too old for the role.
When I read the article I was wondering if Laura Michelle Kelly would be dubbing someone instead of actually being on screen.
EDIT: I just checked and Joslyn was well into her 30s by the time she understudied Johanna in the original production, don't expect this same casting for the film.

Kelly could be playing Lucy in the flashbacks, guys... before she evolves (over 15 years) into the "beggar woman."
It's very possible that they would cast this with two different actresses... since she is "so changed" in the end that Sweeney doesn't recognize her.

Well, yes, casting someone in their thirties as Johanna would be ridiculous when Depp isn't that far into his forties, but someone in their twenties being cast in the role doesn't seem all that unlikely.
