Law and Order: SVU Episode

Looks like the Law and Order: SVU episode tonight seems to be about the Scandal at the NYC Ballet which happened to include the guy who is currently in West Side Story. Was wondering if anyone watched the episode and your guys thoughts on a television show basing a episode on something like this. The episode also includes some Broadway vets!

SVU has a long history of taking on "ripped from the headlines" topics. Interesting to hear they did this, but not totally surprised. I haven't watched SVU in years, but I'd be curious to see how they handled this.

I haven’t watched in years either. Wasn’t tonight the episode with Patrick Page? Maybe I will check it out.

Law and Order: SVU Episode

The entire Law and Order franchise has a long history of using real life events as basis for episodes.

One example, a few seasons back, SVU did an episode that was clearly based on the Travon Martin case.

And, it’s not just SVU that does this. The original series did this more times than I can count during its lengthy tenure on TV.

Also, although no longer on the air, Law and Order:Criminal Intent tackled a “ripped from the headlines” story. A few years back, when Spider Man was on Broadway, they did an episode where they were looking into either a death or injury (don’t remember which one) that an actor had while performing in a complex stunt filled show that was clearly based on the issues that occurred at Spider Man.

So, them doing an episode based on what was going on at NYC Ballet, is not shocking. And as a fan of the franchise, I’d describe it as par for the course more than anything else.

Page played an Artistic Director who pimps out female dancers...story-wise, not that believable to be honest. Ari'el Stachel, was an undercover cop. Would have been more interesting to have Stachel play the dancer at the center of the investigation.

But what do I know...(shrug).

I was just about to post about the episode here. I love SUV and watch it every week. John Waters making an appearance made the episode. I'm glad they shown a spotlight on what happened at the National Ballet, especially with Amar Ramasar being cast in West Side Story.

Well, it's not really about Amar and the ballet, etc. This SVU episode is actually about The Shen Yun Company. I know, I know, here comes the peanut gallery...you have no idea what on earth I am talking about, right?

Google it.

That's because that poster is playing you. The NYT wrote an article about it, as they have covered the ballet scandal for years, and it is about that entire situation.

Oh please...do you ever wonder why Michael Paulson NEVER released that big exposé? The only person being played is you, Sutton...by the muckety-mucks who run showbiz.

And how hard did you try to search for the article? Ok, twist my arm:

Paulson must have fallen prey to a lot of pressure. He's no Ronan Farrow...that's for sure. And no one here has the guts to name names. Including me.

When it was mentioned that the episode was based off Shen Yun, I did a google search and came up with the same article that was linked. I ushered Shen Yun performances before. And, while they are a freaky group, even going so far during their performance to say that traditional Chinese dance cannot be seen in China ever again, nothing in the SVU episode has anything to do with Shen Yun or their practices. It was based on what happened at NYC Ballet.

No it was not. Have you done your research on the Shen Yun AD? The SVU episode was about an AD...he was the perpetrator. Sheesh.

Law and Order: SVU Episode

The NYT published a review of the episode, with the headline "A Ballet Scandal Gets the 'Special Victims Unit' Treatment." It refers only to the New York City Ballet scandal, although it uses the words "loosely modeled." Regardless, it's a fictional television show, and, while it looks like the NYCB was the basis for the episode, it clearly added other elements to the story, possibly some from Shen Yun, to make it more salacious. It isn't just one or the other.

Law and Order: SVU Episode

I mean, very few of SVU’s “inspired by true events” episodes adhere closely to the full event. They typically use the headline of the event and then spring off into their own world. Remember the Casey Anthony episode with Hilary Duff that used an irresponsible mom covering up the death of her toddler to spring board into an indictment against anti-vaxxers?
