Lead in Avenue Q London

Posted: 1/7/08 at 12:34pmI just saw Avenue Q a few days ago in London and it was FANTASTIC. Definitely one of my new favorite shows! Anyway, since they don't hand out playbills (BOO!), and I didn't buy the program...does anyone know who the actor is that plays Princeton/Rod? He was absolutely INCREDIBLE and I need to know who he is! There is no cast list on the website! Thanks!

Kind of a lame argument: on Broadway the Playbills are free AND you can still buy a program if you choose...
The UK brochure is listed at 7 pounds (not sure of the pound symbol on my keyboard), which would be about $14 U.S.

- Exactly. I don't get how our Playbills are awful anyway? They are pretty damn nice for free. Lots of articles, the show's info, other show listings.

playbills & programmes are exactly what we paid for. Playbills are free and they give sufficient cast/creative credits to us whilst programmes gives the same but with more extra stuff and usually in a nicer printed booklet.
I LOVE to buy brochures & programmes but for shows I've seen too many times, only programmes.

I never said they weren't worth the $$...
I was just pointing out to the person blasting Playbill that there's no charge for Playbill, and you can still buy a REAL program, just like in London where that's the ONLY choice.

Posted: 1/7/08 at 7:21pmIn London, the Playbills (specially made programs for each show) cost about 3 pounds.

Posted: 1/7/08 at 7:51pmI don't mind the program or the souvinier program. Both are great to have. Can't wait to go back to London.

Posted: 1/9/08 at 4:40amI am definitely going to buy a program when I see the show (again) on Thursday. I went to buy Rush tickets last night but then I found out Daniel was out... Hopefully he'll be back on Thurs! Anyone else catching the show then? I am so excited! He has remarkable talent...a new favorite for sure!

Posted: 1/9/08 at 6:29amI saw him last year when he and the rest of the new cast had only been doing it 2 weeks. Was very impressed.

There is a major difference in the UK and US programs. In the UK you get full biogs, with decent pictures, each program is 100% different for each show. There is normally an in depth history of the theatre your sitting in plus other topical articles to do with that show. Well worth your $5 appx. The Broadway Playbill contains 3 or 4 pages of cast list, small biogs with even smaller pics. If your lucky sometimes you get a potted theatre history. 90% of the rest of the program is the same as you get for every other show you see in that month together with very heavy advertisng for drug companys etc etc. Yea, its free but hardly worth keeping and thats why i see hundreds off them just thrown on the theatre floor or street outside. Souvenir brochures on Broadway are expensive compared to the London version. You should see, for example what you get for 'Lord Of The Rings' and 'Hairspray' for less than $10- they are amazing with the 'Hairspray' one having 52 pages of show photos and loads of related articles to the show and theatre- only 3 pages of advertising- for $10. Ive never seen that on Broadway. On my many, many visits to Broadway shows over 20 years i always wish they did a decent program for me to keep.

Posted: 1/9/08 at 11:18pmI always buy both the programme and souvenir brochure when a show has them, they're always beautifully done, and even though the credits are the same, the rest of the surrounding information each one has is always interesting.

I love my theatre programmes, I always get one (unless I have just seen the show and the cast hasn't changed).
I love what Wicked and Hairspray have done with their combined programme / brochure. At £6 it is pricey but has lots of infor and great photos.
Really Useful Group theatres (housing Phantom, Spamalot etc..) have a playbill like programme with general articles, which I like but they need updating!
I feel I am going off topic so Avenue Q, I haven't seen the current cast but it sounds like I will have to :)

Ok, so I just got back from the show. Daniel was out tonight!
Oh, and with all this talk about the programs, I got one (haha). ANYWAY, Simon Gorton went on for Princeton/Rod and he didn't really do it for me. He was good, but not great. The rest of the cast was incredible again. Mark Goldthrop as Nicky/Trekkie Monster/ Bear was a stand out performance for me. He is so versatile. I felt like I was truly watching 3 characters. I was also impressed with the New York sounding accents. That must be tricky for them!
A little off topic, but I thought I would just ask...Do people not do stage doors in London? Maybe I'm just inexperienced, but my friend and I waited tonight and we were the only ones there. When we asked some of the cast to sign our programs, they were shocked. Also, in case anyone was wondering Daniel will be out until Monday, so try and go see him. I have never been so impressed!
