Having never seen or read the play “Legends” the play with Mary Martin and Carol Channing. I’m wondering what it’s like? Enjoyable theatre? Terribly flawed?

It’s not a great play at all but with the right cast it can be deliciously bitchy. The Charles Busch/Lypsinca benefit they did in 2009 showed it can be a lot of fun if done right.

It was an audience show--the audience (including myself) loved every minute the day I saw it--and thankfully the two legends were both having a great day.

I imagine with the right cast it can be a lot of fun. I can also confirm Joan Collins and Linda Evans are not said right cast.

We also can’t forget the 2007 U.S. National Tour with DYNASTY’s Joan Collins and Linda Evans:

It’s really bad. Poorly written. I think from this point forward it should only be performed by drag queens or actresses who understand camp. Joan and Linda did not.

100%. I feel like only drag queens at this point can pull from the text what it needs to sell the show.

Yes to the drag queen points. The writing is so bad. You just sitting waiting and waiting for a gag, witty word play, a bitchy zinger and they never come. What it takes is camp and as rightly mentioned in the previous posts, actors who understand how to do camp. It takes someone to pull the words around and simply make them funny because of their tone, or the way they stretch out a vowel, a throw of the head or an audaciously long head pan. Basically, none of what is on the page is good except for the premise.

Kirkwood's book "Diary of a Mad Playwright: Perilous Adventures on the Road with Mary Martin and Carol Channing" is far more entertaining than the play that it chronicles.
