“What do you see as the purpose of black history month ?”

What you’re NOT going to do is explain what black history month is to a black person. Your argument is beyond insulting, disgusting and it’s recommended you sit this one out, because god knows you think you’re making a point and for that I’m sorry for you.

Naming the theater after Horne is not to 'give her attention' but to HONOR her and her legacy. February's Black History Month is not to 'give black people attention' but to HONOR their history and their achievements. By holding this ceremony in February would be the ultimate HONOR to Horne and Black History.

Your dismissing such distinguished honors to Horne and Black history simply as black people 'getting attention' is disgusting and borderline racist.
"

You're not making the point you think you are -- and instead you've chosen to double down on the racism.  As others have pointed out, the purpose of Black History Month is NOT to honor Black people only in February, any more than June is the only month that LGBTQ+ people should ONLY feel proud in June, or that February 14th is the only day that people should express love for their significant other.

Well certainly not to prevent recognizing and honoring Black people 11 months out the year? Yikes.
"

That’s what you see it as not.

what do you see it as is it’s purpose? That’s my question.
"

Your question is silly, and in the context of this discussion is strongly implies you think that society should avoid honoring Black people until February 1, and then stop after February 28. That is profoundly insulting and, frankly, incredibly stupid for lack of a better term.
"

My context of the discusssion is direct, not implied. The poster I was originally addressing (JSquared2) said the month of February is 'to call attention' to black people. I stand by my repsonse that the month is to HONOR black people in history - big difference between the two. And the naming of the theater is to honor Horne, not 'call attention to her' . She's the first to be honored this way, and it would be more appropriate to honor her during BHM.

Since we can go back and look at the thread, JSquared2 said in response to your point that they should have waited until Black History Month to rename the theatre:
OFFS are you serious??. How DARE they try and give black people any attention in MORE than one month a year!!

Now, admittedly, “attention” is probably the wrong choice of words and you are correct that Black History Month is indeed about honoring Black people and events. But what everyone here has taken issue with is your apparent insistence that honoring Black people should only be done in February. You keep trying to bait other posters into saying something racist, when in fact you’ve been saying racist things this whole time. I would maybe take a breath and reflect.

Also, logistically, I imagine there was some sort of time frame that the theatre owners and Black Theater United agreed to.

I'm not insisting anything - follow the thread. In my original post, I asked why they didn't wait until February (BHM) for this event to honor Horne. I never ever said February was the ONLY month - never said or implied that at all. I did say February was the month in which honoring black people in history is celebrated - hence, honoring Horner would be appropriate. I have not tried to 'bait' others, I've been making my same point over and over. I've even asked others what they see the purpose of BHM to be - and so far, no one has answered - they've chosen to be offended instead.  (It's a rather simple question). They've also chosen to misinterpret what I've said and - that February is the only month. Again, February is a recognized month to honor these individuals.

We all love you, Lena.  Can't wait to see your name on your theatre November 1st.  A much-deserved honor!

You are suggesting that Black people should be honored in February, and I presume LGBT people should be honored in June, etc. etc., because you are putting a stunning amount emphasis on these PR-driven, well-intentioned, "months" as if they have any actual bearing on how people should conduct their lives/businesses. They do not.

And the idea that anyone should hold off on honoring someone until it is Their Month is offensive; you must see that. You are here suggesting that Lena Horne should *not* be honored until February. Its hard to believe you actually think anyone behind the invention of Black History Month ever intended to ensure that Black honors only happen 28 days of the year, or that an award to an Asian American should really only be given in May.

If you do, I have bad news for you: today is National Oatmeal Day and World Stroke Awareness Day. I had oatmeal last week, and might again next week, and I have it under good medical authority that we should be continue to be vigilant about stroke symptoms, even tomorrow and the day after.

Dave you basically answered your own point. Why didn’t they wait until February? Because they don’t need to? They can honor her whenever they’d like?

Does anyone know what time the festivities begin on Tuesday? I’ve looked through the press release and the articles and can’t find any info.
