The thing about Mme. Thenardier is that she's not just a clown. There needs to be a darker edge to her and her husband, especially on film. I can't see French or Saunders doing that at all. They could do the rowdy music hall "surface" stuff, but I don't think they can pull off the rest.

... although I could see Joanna Lumley doing it, but I think she's a tad too old for it.

And ray, I agree with your thoughts!

As far as Amy Adams, I think she'd be good, but there is something so very Anglo about her, as with much of the other casting. I was hoping Cotillard might get in there so at least ONE French performer was on screen. instead we're looking awfully BBC/RSC with the cast. (And I'm talking about looks, not about actual heritage or nationalities.)

Actually, Bonham Carter comes the closest to "looking" French, and perhaps Radcliffe, if he's cast.

I doubt Geoffrey Rush will be part of this movie. He played Javert on film before.

So what? And he'd be a great Thénardier.

I don't see Mme. Thenardier as just a clown, either, which is why I probably lean more toward Saunders. But they are the sole comedy relief in a VERY drama-heavy show with Thenadier already given more dark material than his wife. Mme. Thenardier is more two-dimensional than her husband, who at least tosses us a bit of Nietzsche philosphy in the second act. To me, Saunders does have that balance of comedy and manipulative selfish bitch. A good director will bring out the dark side. A bad director will get Ann Harada to repeat her performance on Broadway.

The darker edge of Mme. Thenardier comes out in her moments with young Cosette. When we can see the mistreatment and neglect. I'd love to see Bonham Carter do that. She wouldn't give it the "Miss Hannigan School of Comic Neglect" feel either. She could make her sinister and real. Then she can yuck it up with the bar mates and her hubby.

I have to say that was one of my biggest problems when I saw the OBC. The Thenardiers were SO different in tone and style than the rest of the performers, it felt very out-of-step. Like they had crashed the theatre from a neighboring Carol Burnett Show sketch. It was really TOO different. I agree they are the comic relief, but pulling out all the stops makes them seem like aliens from another planet. There's a risk in going too far. And on film, it would only be amplified.

Why wouldn't Geoffrey Rush do it? It's a great role, he looks fantastic as a grubby old man (see Pirates) and it's with a director he obviously has a very good, successful relationship with. Providing his schedule allows I can't see why he wouldn't do it. I think Helena would do dark and threatening really well actually and I have no doubt she could do the bawdy bit, she's not exactly the quiet little mouse in some other roles.

I see no reason why Rush wouldn't do it unless a) they don't pay him enough, or b) he can't clear his schedule when they're shooting. But he loves musicals, and I'm sure the project and the part are appealing to him.

I know what you mean, Besty. That's how I felt about Ann Harada and the current touring Thenardiers (he phoned it in and she hammed it up). I did see the original Thenardiers in London and they were astonishing. They were very sinister and menacing, yet at times a bit clumsy, which is how they played off the comedy. Fuschia Walker was the best I saw on Broadway and the only African-American I've seen in the role. She was both frightening and funny and made it seem effortless. She only displayed one brief moment of schtick, but she delivered it with so much truth, it didn't really look like slapstick.

^ That would be the key.

If you go too far, it won't work, and if you underplay it, it could fall flat.

I agree that sometimes the Thenardiers are played TOO comedically. Often the audience responds to them in such a way that I wonder if they realize these are the same people who emotionally and physically abused an 8-year-old girl.

Rush would be brilliant. I have also always wanted to see Tim Curry do the role, personally.

The idea of Emma Watson, if she can sing, really intrigues me. It would be great for her getting away from Hermione, and I think her acting in the last couple HP movies was great.

I'd love to see what any one of Julia McKenzie or Imelda Staunton or Brenda Blethyn could do with it.

Whoever suggested Tim Curry is brilliant...
I think that Anne Hathaway would be a wonderful Cosette.

Anne Hathaway is too old for Cosette in a film version. She could play Fantine, though.

I have to say that if it ends up being Emma Watson as Cosette and Daniel Radcliffe as Marius, that's just a little ... weird.

Peachesr, I was coming here to mention Seyfried, apparently she trained in opera for two years, so she might be a good choice for Cosette. She looks young enough, I'd say.

YOUNG Cosette, right? Les Miserables Movie Casting Rumors and Filming Date

Personally I would switch around Jackman and Crowe, but ok... I've been listening to some clips of Crowe singing and I actually quite like his voice. Just an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqhwBr6cyEI

Rush as Thénardier would be perfect. Not sure if she can sing, but what about Frances McDormand as Mme Thénardier? If he were younger, I think Patrick Wilson would have made a fine Enjolras.

As for Marius, ever since I saw him Arcadia, I think Tom Riley really has the 'Marius look'.

Love all the names being thrown around. Especially Rush and Bonham Carter, perfect casting.

Logan Lerman, of the upcoming "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "Three Musketeers" reboot, I think would be a good Marius, provided he can sing. I'd prefer Darren Criss or even one of the Jonas boys to Radcliffe.

Love Sarah Hyland as Eponine.

Amy Adams and Rebecca Hall are decent choices for Fantine. I'd like someone with a chestier belt, though. Lauren Ambrose would be fantastic.

Madame Thenardier is too close to Mrs. Lovett to have Helena - it would practically be the same performance in a different film. Toni Collette gets my vote - she'd give a much darker interpretation while still being really funny. Pair her with Geoffrey Rush. Or what about Mark Rylance or Mackenzie Crook? I still really want Marion Cottilard as Fantine. The whole cast shouldn't have to be stars- surely Marius, Cosette, Eponine and Enjrolas should be really talented unknowns.

Miranda Cosgrove is the most auto-tuned of the new breed of Disney TV actresses (and that's saying something). She's a very unsubtle actress as well. Hayden at least has some gravitas to her, but I don't love that casting either. I guess Amanda Seyfried is too gorgeous (even dirtied up in a cap) to believe Marius would ever fall for anyone ELSE...but I really like her...

How much is the time gap between young Cosette and older Cosette? The two anniversary concerts certainly had very different ages for her, which in turn kind of changes the age of Marius. I would assume the film would go with a younger looking Cosette so that people like Valjean and Javert who are in both times wouldn't have to look significantly older.
