I don't think the Thenardiers should be grandparents. They're younger, sleazier, and opportunistic.
aka, Glenn's too old. (So is Meryl, for that matter.)

I agree about Mark Hamill is good at playing a villain, listening to his voice work on "Avatar the Last Airbender;" he can be chilling. Like others, I am not sure how good his chances are at getting cast as Thenrdier in the movie.
Glad to hear some rumors on casting for other roles. I'll just have to wait and see who gets cast and see the movie to judge.

If they're planning to start filming soon, we should be getting some solid casting news in the next week or so. Hopefully they'll be actual casting confirmations and no more rumors, negotiations, speculation, etc.
I love Mark Hamill too but he has no chance at Thenardier. I'm not even sure what his last role before the camera even was, he seems to much prefer voice work these days.

Yeah, that's why I said he'd never do it in the movie. I don't even know if he'd do it on stage... but if they do a studio recording of the show at some point, like Jonathan Pryce did The Emcee in the complete Cabaret recording, I'd love to hear Hamill do it.
Although I've also heard rumors he intends to retire "that voice" after fiishing promotional work for Batman: Arkham City, because it's increasingly hard to do, which would put a damper on his Thenardier.

"You think Close and Streep are too old but not Rush? He is only 2 years younger than Streep."
Yes, welcome to "ancient times" when husbands were usually older than their wives. Sometimes a lot older. But I agree, Rush is pushing it, as far as age. I would prefer they were both a little younger.
EDIT: They're Eponine's parents, too, so they need to be the right age for that.

Posted: 8/28/11 at 1:31pmThey're also Gavroche's parents. Plus, Thenardier's age has to line up with someone who could have served in the Napoleonic Wars.

Besty is right, I wouldn't be put off by an age difference between the Thenardiers and it is mainly important that Madame Thenardier is younger in terms of being around Eponine's age. Not to mention the fact that the chemistry between her and Rush would be through the roof, I can only imagine the sparks they'd create on camera (their scenes in THE KING'S SPEECH are few but quite great).
Meryl Streep doesn't need to be in this movie, and I say this as a huge fan of hers. Bonham Carter seems ideal for it, IMO.

Posted: 8/28/11 at 3:23pmI don't think that Thenardier's age has to line up with Gavroche or the Napoleonic Wars. The fact that he fought in them is never mentioned in the musical, and it's implied when Gavroche is introducing the Thenardiers that he's not related to them in the musical- it would be weird for him to refer to Thenardier as "old Thenardier" instead of "my dad Thenardier" or something. Plus, none of the other pronouns in that verse make sense for a kid talking about his family. That said, I think that Toni Collette would be a great fit for Mme. Thenardier.

Posted: 8/28/11 at 4:35pmIs the set of lines about Thenardier being at Waterloo (picking the pockets of the English dead) still in the show? That's how it's explained there. If those lines are gone, then they might just ditch the Waterloo coat in the movie rather than have the audience confused by it.

It's beginning to look like as if everyone wants to be in this film
The latest rumor from BWW itself is that the Fantine role may go to Anne Hathaway, at the supposed prodding from Hugh Jackman himself. Maybe it is payback time for her Oscars tirade at Hugh ( On My Own) - LOL!

Hm - I'd prefer Amy Adams to Hathaway. She can sing but I'm not sure she's got the chops to play the bitter, downtrodden, dying Fantine. She's too juvenile and perky.

From Anne Hathaway's Wikipedia career listings --
>>>Hathaway had dramatic roles in Havoc and Brokeback Mountain, both in 2005. She starred in The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and in Becoming Jane (2007) as Jane Austen. In 2008, she was acclaimed for her lead role in Rachel Getting Married, for which she won awards and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.<<<

I'll repeat my suggestion of Hugh Laurie as Thenardier. I wish Kathy Bates were younger, because she'd be my 1st choice for Madame Thenardier.
And yeah, anyone who thinks Hathaway can only play perky should rent Rachel Getting Married.

Of course, unreservedly!
She already had an audition in front of millions and millions of people - the Oscars audience for 2010 - when she did a parody of ON MY OWN, to Hugh Jackman's discomfort

I am sure she can do justice to I DREAMED A DREAM, too.

Like Lea Salonga who was recently acclaimed as a Disney Legend ? She has sung either Eponine and Fantine onstage and in both Les Mis anniversary concerts, to much acclaim!

Posted: 8/29/11 at 9:51pmHathaway can play dark but casting her as Fantine is so predictable, Rebecca Hall would have been a bolder choice and Amy Adams would have heartbreaking IMO. I do like the idea of Hathaway working with Tom Hooper, we'll see what the final cast turns out to be though.

Posted: 8/29/11 at 10:00pmIs Amy Adams's voice not too disney princess? I would honestly be fine with either. I love how they were both considered for a cameo in the rock of ages movie, both have been a "princess" in a disney movie, and both are playing America's most popular superheros' love interests. It's only fitting that they are both in contention for Fantine.
