Posted: 5/8/08 at 2:16pmI'd be surprised if "Last Night of Ballyhoo" was a financial flop. It ran nearly two years, was not a big cast, and won the Tony as Best Play.

A "flop" is a show that does not recoup its initial investment. A show that did not make money. A show that lost money.
GREY GARDENS lost its entire investment, therefore it is a flop.
Now, now Foster. If you want to get technical, there are two different kinds of flops: critical and financial.
All of these are financial flops, but not all are critical flops.

Come on now, guys -- quite a few of these were limited engagement/limited runs so their inclusion on here is redundant.
Just because a show has a short run doesn't necessarily mean it flopped on Broadway. This also applies to PARADE -- it was actually a limited run show (so I found out recently from Carolee Carmello's own lips).

Posted: 5/9/08 at 11:07amEverything at LCT is a limited run show, unless it is a hit and they extend it a hundred times (Anything Goes, Carousel, Piazza, South Pacific).

Posted: 5/9/08 at 11:11amIt seems like quite a few flops have come out of either the Richard Rogers or Helen Hayes theatres.

Posted: 8/22/08 at 1:17amI would have thought Diary of Anne Frank, Last Night of Ballyhoo, Amadeus, and Beauty Queen of Leenane were all money-makers. This thread has provided many interesting tidbits and images! Thanks for sharing. Particularly, it was nice to see The Wild Party and Caroline, or Change marquees.

Posted: 8/22/08 at 2:10amYou know, since shows on Broadway that turn a profit are now in the minority, it really doesn't make sense for some of these shows to be considered "flops," even if they did end in the red. There should be a seperate category for shows that got great reviews are considered modern classics that just couldn't bring in the tourists!

Now, now Foster. If you want to get technical, there are two different kinds of flops: critical and financial.
There is no such thing as a critical hit or flop. Some shows are considered successes even though they fail to pay off. (Hal Prince often cites PACIFIC OVERTURES as an example. "It was a flop, but it was a success," he says.)
Yes, shows can get great reviews and still lose money and some shows that get mixed or poor reviews can make huge profits. (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a perfect example of this.)
Some people take the Flop designation so personally, as if it were a personal attack on the show. It is JUST a designation, and as I have said many times unless you are an investor the designation should not matter to you. For those of us who collect Braodway stats it matters only as a point of reference.
Foster, as a p.o.r. I believe BALLYHOO did pay off by the time it closed but at present I cannot lay my hands on my copy of the June 1998 Variety that would confirm this.
And B3TA07, as of Variety's end of season report in June of 2008 CURTAINS was still listed as Status Not Dtermined. So unless it somehow paid off in the final 4 weeks of its run - which is is highly unlikely - it was indeed a financial failure.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
