A certain Renthead told me I don't have anything good to contribute to Rent threads besides "bragging" about Chicago. So they told me to make a thread for the movie and not post there. Well here's the thread!
13 Oscar Nominations, 6 Wins. That's right!
How gorgeous is Catherine Zeta-Jones?
So damn gorgeous. I would do anything to have her on Broadway in anything!

Catherine was SOOO mis-cast in Chicago. Velma is supposed to be the elder, more experienced of the pair. Casting her as younger and fatter than Roxie, just did not work. You may throw at me, so she won an oscar for it, and that counts as what? Tom Wanks, sorry Hanks won an Oscar for 'Forrest Gump'!
"We Both Reached for the Gun" is one of the best movie musical numbers ever filmed. Was a real dummy ever used? (No jokes about Renee's intelligence, please. She's brilliant.)
Catherine Zeta-Jones most definitely looks and acts older than Renee Zelwegger. I don't see where you are coming from. And I certainly would not say that she is fat.
Umm. In the original production Chita Rivera (Velma) was 8 years younger than 50 year old Gwen Verdon (Roxie)
And in the original revival cast Bebe Neuwirith (Velma) was 9 years younger than Ann Reinking (Roxie)
I think Catherine was PERFECT as Velma, and most certainly do not think she was fat, holy moly!
Catherine is only about 5 months younger than Renee. Besides, she's hardly fat. I think she's gorgeous, and she and Renee provided a good contrast between Velma and Roxie. They were both brilliant. The movie didn't win 6 Oscars for nothing...

Not only is Catherine not fat, she was also a few months pregnant while filming the movie. She is also much better looking and far more talented than Renee.
Zellweger is exactly 5 months older than Zeta-Jones.
And I thought Zeta-Jones played the role older and wiser than Zellweger.
And if she's fat in the Chicago movie, does that make Queen Latifah a large city?

The closest thing Zeta-Jones came to being fat was accepting her Oscar 8 months pregnant. She is a beautiful talented women.
I know in the supporting actors categories there is often a 'defining scene' which wins the Oscar for the actor (like Marissa Tomei's courtroom scene in 'My Cousin Vinny'). What did you think that 'defining scene was for Catherine Zeta-Jones?
For me it was the 'I Can't Do It Alone' number. It made me sit up in my chair and go 'holy sh!t, that women, can dance, act & sing!'. Especially since on the stage, I have never been to impressed with that song, but in the movie, it punched me right in the gut. She completely brought across the desperation of Velma at that point.
I think her I CAN'T DO IT ALONE is amazing. Probally my favorite musical number from the film.
She's amazing in that number.

Chicago was overrated... GOOD but overrated. Everyone only freaked because they could see mega-celebrities actually sing and dance. The only person that blew me away was Latifah.
"I can't do it alone" is just amazing...
Could I hate her anymore?! She's BEAUTIFUL, and can act, dance, and sing circles around MANY MANY people...gahh..not fair!! lol
Fat...ahaha...I guess that *does* makes Latifa a large city...BWAHAHAA...that was a good one..
I was really hesitant about seeing this movie, as I did not want to ruin my memory of what I thought was a great stage show.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Rob Marshall did a wonderful job adapting the story, dancing, sequences, etc to the screen.
I plan on purchasing the DVD soon, and enjoying some of the extras!

Chicago wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but I thought the actors did fairly well. Cellblock Tango had to be my favorite number in the movie.
If Cathering Zeta Jones is fat, what are the rest of us who consider ourselves ro be average sized? She is absolutely GORGEOUS, she isn't a waif, but is by no means fat. Beauty, brains, talent...gahh she is one lucky lady.
This was such a phenomenal movie. And the cast was all pitch perfect, starting with the two best performances of that year (Catherine Zeta Jones & Queen Latifah). They were electrifying each in their own right.
I LOVE CHICAGO!! my favorite numbers are cell block tango and i can't do it alone. Catherine Zeta-Jones is AWSOME!! i would die to see her on Broadway! i'm in the mood to watch it tonight..lol
Zellwegger was completely stunning as Roxie, one of the best I've ever seen and gives a truly underrated performance. As wonderful as Nicole Kidman was in The Hours, Renee totally deserved that OScar just as much as she did (but I'm not complaining, a year later Renee DID win an Oscar, in a film costarring Ms. Kidman, no doubt). This was just a wonderful film all around.
And Angus-Was the Tom Hanks/Forrest Gump comment supposed to be sarcasm?
