Linnamon Role Appreciation Thread - :p

Hey you guys, I have never made a post on here before and this is my first one! I'm surprised that there isn't already a Lin or Hamilton thread since they're both probably the most popular things to come to Broadway! I was never into musical theatre until I listened to Hamilton and now I love it! I thought that we could make an appreciation thread for Lin because he is probably one of the most best composers to ever come around and he literally reinvigorated Broadway. On top of that, Lin also acts and sings and is a political advocate!

So here's to Lin Manuel Miranda and Hamilton!

(also free to talk about In the Heights and Bring It On too, I don't really know much about either show but they were both written by Lin so they're obviously going to be good).

P.S. I have also started listening to DEH (Dear Evan Hansen) and if this thread goes well I was thinking making another for DEH, and Ben Platt because DEH means so much to so many people and its so relatable and such an accurate depiction of mental illness. So yeah, let me know if you guys think I should also make one for DEH (Dear Evan Hansen) and I will!

Why? Lin is probably the most successful performer and composer of this generation along with being incredibly talented and a good person. Who else do you know who can compose their own show and star in it. NO ONE. Only Lin can do that because he is LIN MANUEL MIRANDA. He has three Tony awards, like there is probably no other performer who has that many awards because then they would obviously be more famous than Lin if they did.

If you want to become a true theater fan (which it is very clear you do, but just as clear that you really are not), my advice would be to look up and watch all of the musicals that inspired Mr. Miranda (because you can do that very easily now) and if you come back with an appreciation for Sondheim and Rodgers & Hammerstein, then maybe you’ll be taken seriously (and you should probably start with West Side Story because it’s one of the definitive Broadway shows and it’s an intro to Bernstein and Sondheim).

I mean, Sara Bareilles and Dave Malloy did as you described in the past year.

Also John Cameron Mitchell, George M Cohan, Billy Joe Armstrong, Sting, many others im sure I’m forgetting, not to mention countless off-Broadway shows.

Also seriously, just stop while you're ahead. Lin isn't the greatest thing to hit Broadway, and based on what I've heard, isn't the nicest person in real life either. I think if you really want to talk about this at length, you should join the kids on twitter because no one on here really cares about Lin or Hamilton anymore.

Here are some recommendations to get you away from Hamilton.

- Waitress, Sara Bareilles wrote and starred in it. Jenna is abused by her husband, to her the only way out is baking.

- Ragtime, About 3 groups in the early 1900s, The citizens of Harlem, Immigrants, and the rich white people. Listen to Wheels of a Dream, Make them hear you, Crime of the century, and Ragtime.

- Once on this Island- An adaptation of "The Little Mermaid". I would recommend the revival recording.

- Big Fish- About Edward Bloom, he is at the end of his life and recalling what he did when he was younger.

- School of Rock, Dewey Finn needs to pay his rent so he decides to take his roommates substitute teaching job. He realizes the kids can play music and tries to get them to win the battle of the bands.

Andrew Lloyd Webber... And many others. Listen, I know people like you. I'm young enough to know kids like you yet wise enough to understand why you hhink like this.

So, you recently got into musicals through Hamilton. You took the Hansen route, where you will soon arrive at Heathers, Be More Chill, Falsettos, and whatever you can get your hormonal hands on! That's alright! But just understand that this is not appropriate on this board. We get it, you think Lin is pure, Hamilton is bi and Jefferson or Laurens is soooooo gay for him (protip: it's all in your head).

I suggest instead of joining those vicious animals, listen to Griefs other musical, Next to Normal. It's a much better portrayal of mental illness than Hansen! I also recommend Fun Home if you want an LGBT protagonist you can relate to. You're into innovative stuff? Ghost Quartet or Great Comet are for you! Awesome! Really need that HOT actor to look up to? Newsies has a bunch.

I'm glad you like theatre, but don't contribute to the cringe culture. Theres so much out there, even if you don't like classics (I hate Oklahoma and Cats so I get it) there's things other than the latest hit. Also off Broadway is a great thing, Avenue Q and The Lucky Ones I heard are really good. (Not to mention the Lucky Ones has one of Hansens partners in it. Enjoy yourself on your theatre journey!

Lin was always a bit much for me, but I've never heard that he isn't nice but to be quite honest I'm not surprised. What do people say he does/ is like?

I'm in the industry in Chicago and know a lot of people who have crossed paths with him. Basically I've just heard that he knows that he's a big deal and acts like it in person. A bit demanding, divaesque, etc. If I ever mention his name around those people, they usually cringe.
