While she is not a draw that turns big numbers at the box office, the woman consistently delivers excellent layered performances. I feel lucky to see her whenever she is on stage.
Nobody is questioning her talent as an actress. She’s one of the greats. She just doesn’t sell (even in the shows that opened post-Oscar nom and at peak Conners). She works on Broadway too frequently to be an “event” for anyone but niche theatre fans. The key for these overexposed thespians is they need bigger costars. Same with people like Audra & Nathan & Lithgow.
- Grey House — closed early/flopped
- Hillary & Clinton — closed early/flopped
- Three Tall Women recouped, but Glenda Jackson and the ensemble made it an event
- Doll’s House — flopped, despite building steam post-opening and post-Tonys
- Misery might have just squeaked by thanks to Bruce Willis
- Brighton Beach Memoirs folded after a matter of days and Broadway Bound never even opened.
And I’m sure the poor advance sales for VIRGINIA WOOLF factored into the decision not to continue.
I hope Metcalf and Mantello find a way to do Woolf again. Recast the whole thing, who cares, but we need to see Laurie’s Martha.

I think the bigger issue with VIRGINIA WOOLF was the fact that 3/4 of the cast were from the UK and the borders were shutting down. With no guidance on how to proceed, they may have just decided to close under an Act of God clause.
I got to see Grangeville in the Spring. A Case for the Existence of God for a second time this summer in Chester, MA. So grateful that I have my tickets for Little Bear Ridge Road for October. I am very happy that Samuel Hunter is making his Broadway debut. I could easily see one of his plays every season and be quite content.

Since your comment below was posted right after mine, let me note the obvious in case you were reacting to me: I didn't say anyone was questioning her talent nor do I see much questioning of your earlier observation that she is not a box office draw. In fact, many of us echoed it.
But it is good of you to share your superior knowledge of her box office performance even though no one was questioning your earlier assertion.
You win! Where should we send the trophy?

The box office for this opens tomorrow at 10am. Is anyone aware of any specials on previews tickets? I don't have social media to check.
Thanks

I have not seen any preview pricing or any specials on social media. The rear side mezz is priced similar to rush at $56 which includes a $9 fee so I guess it will be $47 at the box office.
