I'm pretty sure I'm staying at The Curtis when I go...cool!
OMG, so excited.
I just got back from seeing this. In a word: Awesome. The Lion King is still my favorite of Disney's live shows, but this is a close second.
-Sierra Bodgess(sp?) was wonderful. She really felt like a live action version of the Ariel in the movie.
-BUT, the whole show was pretty much stolen by Ursula, Flotsam, and Jetsam. I was sceptical about Sherie Rene Scott playing Ursula at first, but after seeing and hearing her, those doubts were all crushed. Tyler Maynard and Derrick Baskin were entertaining to watch together, and although they weren't as creepy as their movie counterparts, they still remained my favorite characters(I just love those eels). Plus, their song(Sweet Child) was my personal favorite of the new songs.
-Sean Palmer looked the part, had a great voice, and was lightyears more interesting than the Prince Eric in the movie.
-Tituss Burgess was a great casting choice. He really embodied Sebastian perfectly.
-Norm Lewis did an OK job as King Triton, but there were times when he just wasn't convincing enough.
-My only major complaint...Scuttle. His songs reminded me of The Lion King's 'The Morning Report.'(NOT something I like to be reminded of) Not AS annoying, but close. Also, without Buddy Hackett he just seems like a less comical version of Timon.
-The show looks AMAZING. I don't want to give a lot away, but the visuals are terrific. The sets(Especially the underwater ones) all seem believable, and the costumes are beautiful(Again, Scuttle is the one exception. He's not supposed to look good, but I just didn't like his costume. Something about it just looked wrong). I liked what they did with Flotsam & Jetsam's glowing eyes, they managed to pull it off without it looking tacky. But my favorite costume of the lot was Ursula's. It doesn't look like anything special the first time you see her, but once she really starts moving and using the tentacles, it looks great.
All in all, the show was amazing. The vocals were terrific, the visuals were even better, and it's enjoyable from beginning to end. If you liked Beauty & The Beast and The Lion King, you'll love this...

I know this is way to early to predict, but can we say Sherie=Tony! I'm really glad to hear that it was awesome!
BTW: Here is the picture of sierra in her wig that got taken down:

WAY too early.
Good to know the show seems to be a very good production.
How were the new songs and the book?

I'm getting so excited for this!
OK, one more try on posting that photo correctly FAOB...
Is that a Flotsam or Jetsam puppet in the background?
Thanks for the post, TheFriarsDruggist. Was Ursula purple? What color was her hair? I'm trying to visualize this character.
I'm disappointed to hear that Norm Lewis didn't live up to expectations. Hopefully he will grow during the Denver run.
Oh man, time to shell out the big ones for Sherie (thank god I'm seeing Young Frankenstein in Seattle, much cheaper). Though it is hard for me to believe that Little Mermaid will be better than The Lion King.
Yay Sherie!!

Haha sorry logan I'm having issues with it showing up...
I don't know if we found out the answer to this in the past..
But is Sherie's Ursula fat?
so it looked fantastic.
but how was the story telling?

Sherie's category is usually the most competitive and hardest to predict in the musical acting categories. What with Sutton Foster, Leslie Kritzer, Mary Testa, Jackie Hoffman already in the running (apart from a slew of other actresses in other upcoming musicals) it's going to be tough.
I am definitely seeing this for Sherie though, despite being in some shows I don't particularly enjoy, she always manages to rise above any poor material she is given and when she's given good material she certainly makes it even better. When Ken Mandelbaum reviewed the replacement cast of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, he mentioned that Rachel York was good as Christine but "there's only one Sherie Rene Scott." He couldn't have been more right.
Kudos to Sherie for stealing the show.
OK guys question...in the pic I posted...is that Johnny Depp in Don Juan on the wall in the room behind her where the lady is vacuuming?
....j/w.
What was the staging like?!
The dialogue was similair to the movie's for the most part. The first scene with Ursula and her eels is longer and there's a short monologue explaining that she's Triton's sister. There are a few new bits of dialogue, but nothing too different from the movie's.
The new songs...
The extended Fathoms Below/Where I belong-OK. It works for the show's opening.
The World Above-Good, but it almost felt like a watered down(no pun intended) version of Part Of Your World.
Human Stuff-Personally, I hated it. Some people might like it, but it was the show's low point for me.
I Want The Good Times Back-GREAT. It's Ursula & the eels first song, and it's where Sherie steals the show and doesn't give it back.
She's In Love-Pretty good. It had a sort of 50's girl group feeling to it, and it worked. Plus the kid playing Flounder nailed his part.
Her Voice-I liked it. Sean Palmer's high point in the show IMO.
Sweet Child-LOVED IT. A lot of people probably won't like it as much as I did, but Flotsam & Jetsam were always my favorite characters(in the movie and here), and it was great seeing them get their own song. Plus, it's a fun song but has a slightly creepy vibe to it at the same time, which perfectly suits those two.
Positoovity-Another Scuttle song. Not as grating as Human Stuff, but definitely the show's 2nd lowest point IMO.
Beyond My Wildest Dreams-It took me a little to realize it was Ariel's imagination, but the song itself is good. Not Part Of Your World good, but good.
Les Poissons(extended)-Hilarious. The reprise had the entire audience cracking up(I'm not giving it away, but it immediately brings to mind another Disney favorite...).
One Step Closer-I think I liked it in the theatre, but I don't really remember it now...So it's good but forgettable.
The Contest-It's a funny song. I'm glad they kept it short so the joke didn't wear thin.
In case it hasn't already been mentioned, there were signs up saying you could pre-order the Cast Recording, and that it's supposed to come out in the Fall sometime, which is DEFINITELY something to be excited for...

I hated both human stuff and positoovity on the demo.
um did they cut "If Only" and "All Good Things Must End?" "If Only" gets me so much. I'm glad "Wasting Away" was replaced.

I really liked the scuttle songs on the demo, I thought they were really good IMO, not great, but not bad either..
