Posted: 1/2/04 at 11:56pmWow. You really think Kerry Butler has a horrible voice that doesn't belong on Broadway? I don't think I've ever heard someone on Broadway that didn't belong. Sorry you feel that way.

Kerry has an incredible voice and belongs on Broadway, in films and anywhere she wants to be.

Posted: 1/3/04 at 1:31amI like it better when people do try to make the role their own. Kerry will never play the role as well as ellen if she is trying to imitate her performance.....If I wanted to see the exact same interpretation i would just go rent the movie!!! I saw it and I think Kerry does as good a job as anybody could. Good for Jerry Zaks for trying to bring a new way of looking at the show

Posted: 1/3/04 at 2:41amI just don't think Kerry knew what to do with the role. Forget about Ellen Greene, besides the fact that Kerry isn't Ellen, Kerry brought a new way of looking at Audrey that I didn't want to look at. She made AUdrey real ditzy and bright. Audrey is supposed to be a slut with a heart who knows of her bad luck but tries to put it in the past. Kerry just made it sem like 'Today's a party!' even during her death. She has an amzing voice and deserves to be on broadway. just not as audrey

This is all so interesting to me since my wife and I just watched the LSOH movie on DVD last weekend.
My wife usually does not like cast recordings unless she has seen the show, she likes to be able to visualize the songs. The new LSOH recording is an exception. She has never seen any stage version and had never seen the movie. I played the new OBC CD a few times and she loved it. Through Netflix I had them send the LSOH movie and her reaction was interesting. She was pissed that her favorite songs were cut. (Mushnik and Son, Call Back in the Morning, Closed for Renovation)
But her most interesting reaction was to Ellen Greene. My wife said that the girl on the CD (Kerry) sang so much better than the girl in the movie (Ellen). She also said that she could not understand her (Ellen) in Somewhere That’s Green because of here annoying nasal sound.
Do me a favor New York and make sure LSOH is still running in March when we make our next trip to see this show for ourselves!

I respect and understand (to some extent) everyone's opinions. If you think Kerry shouldn't be on Broadway, that's fine with me. However, I think the girl has an amazing talent and deserved every role she every played and she is a fine Audrey.
She's NOT Ellen Greene. The End.
No one can play the part like Greene. I think Kerry respected the original by keeping the voice and attitude a little bit, but put her own flair into the role. The way she sang was different, the way she walked was different, etc.
However, if the girl has come this far, I don't think she deserves people saying she shouldn't be on Broadway. And just because you don't want to be on Broadway doesn't mean you shouldn't respect the actors and their interpretations of the roles they play.

Posted: 1/3/04 at 10:52amWho is saying she shouldn't be on broadway? I'm just saying that she isn't the best Audrey. She deserves roles that she can do amazingly. Audrey isn't that complicated a role. But Kerry (like I said) made her ditzy, and that's not Audrey. As for tkts. Ever heard of a "character voice"?

Posted: 1/3/04 at 10:56amThe best way I can put it is that Kerry was in a no win situation. If she did Ellen Greene, people would have thought she was trying to do a copy. If she did it fresh and new, like now, she gets crap about not being as good as Ellen Greene or no sense of character.

Ellen is Ellen Kerry is Kerry.
They are both incredibly talented stars.
Enough said.
I wish I could sing and look like Kerry.

Posted: 1/3/04 at 12:07pmI dont see why every one loves Elen Greene. I find her voice kinda anoying.

Posted: 1/3/04 at 12:10pmCorine I like Kerry's voice, I loved her in Bat Boy and Hairspray. I just didn't like her acting in LSOH.

Posted: 1/5/04 at 3:46pmIt is a shame how people bad mouth the real talent on Broadway. If she wasn't talented, Kerry, she would not be there. (I don't mean the big name stars that come for a few months to sell tickets). I did see Little Shop last week. Although I love Kerry, I did like her better in Hairspray. I loved the three gals that played the Chiffons and thought they added a lot to the show. Hunter Foster was great as Seymour. It is hard because I remember the movie version and I think no one was better than Steve Martin as the dentist. The plant stole the show!!!!!!!!!

Posted: 1/5/04 at 4:35pmhmmmm.....interesting that the majority of people on this board who support Kerry in the role of Audrey are teenagers...

Posted: 1/5/04 at 4:37pmIf Kerry played the role just like Ellen Greene, everybody would be complaining how she couldnt make the role original and blah blah blah. She tried to take Audrey in a new direction and I admire what she did. She steered away from the unexpected performance of Audrey. And someone said her voice belongs back at high school- well she can come to our high school, I wouldnt mind! Her voice is amazing! That girl can belt. I love Ellen Greene, but I totally forgot about her at Kerry's performance in LSOH. Thats what you got to do to enjoy it.

I agree with Benzy92 basically haha.
This is what happens...you only read some of the posts, and end up posting something of the same nature. Well I second it!
I love Alice Ripley as well and heard all the same rumors. And I would like to see Felicia Finley play Audrey some day too. I think she would do a nice job- JUST LIKE KERRY!

Posted: 1/5/04 at 4:49pmIf you read the interview with Kerry on this site, she explains that she realized she was in a no-win situation, and so she and Jerry Zaks decided it would be best if she made it her own. You guys should read what she says about the role; it may be easier for those upset about her portrayl to understand how hard it was.

Posted: 1/5/04 at 5:03pmMe? I have not seen the original movie version, but I own the Off-Broadway soundtrack, so I can really only comment on the music. Personally, I found Ellen Greene's lisp to be rather irksome and it was all I could focus on while listening to the songs. But it was part of the character, I understand, so I hold nothing against Ms Greene for it. I love Kerry's voice. As for Kerry making the role her own, I, too, admire that decision. Ellen Greene was what people wanted, but she didn't choose that path. I'll elaborate more once I view the movie.

Up there I wasnt trying to be sarcastic at all. Kerry is a great performer and shes a favorite, so it does make you feel annoyed no matter who has the freedom of speech that other people are so negative about her. But I'm sure everybody could be like that- even myself.
