Sadly, the London Emile is a bore. In fact, the whole show looks absolutely ancient compared to today's standards. And this was a proper re-creation of the New York show.
Oh, and one of the guys walking across the stage was Larry Hagman, Mary's son.

Posted: 8/25/10 at 6:27pmI loved the show, but I wished the the close-ups had been a little less close up. It had a pan-and-scan effect that cropped the stage. I'd rather they'd backed up enough to give us a view as though we had fabulous seats in the orchestra. Little details I'd noticed in the theater were lost, for example, there were three or four black sailors who were always together and separate from the rest. It was a subtle and interesting detail I didn't notice on TV.

They might not have shown it much, but enough so that I noticed it - and I've only seen the production through the broadcast.

Sadly, things haven't changed that much. A USN destroyer docked in Toronto a few years back and I went down for a tour.
What struck me like a knife in the heart was my first view of the ship. The loading hatches on the side were open, probably airing the ship out a bit. The top deck crew were all white. And dressed in visitor's whites.
The lower level crew members, dressed in denims, were getting some air around the big loading dock.
Not a white face in the bunch.
We still have work to do...

Posted: 8/26/10 at 12:10amFive til Curtain has a new video up on youtube. I won't link to it since it's pretty much inappropriate in all ways. But also pretty funny too.

Posted: 8/26/10 at 12:23amI would say it is pretty inappropriate in almost every way. But on the other hand, it is very well sung. I am going to miss those videos- those two should have their own show (as long as it is not aired during the family hour!).

Posted: 9/26/10 at 4:33pmI had no desire to ever see South Pacific before. I knew it was going to be on PBS and I recorded it but never watched it until today. I just finished Act 1 and I have a newfound apprecation for the show. I can't wait for Act 2!
