Seems I'm not the only one who thinks she was a mess this morning as I'm receiving an enslaught of PMs from others who agree with me and are refraining from posting on here.
Yes, she's a legend. Yes, she's one heck of a world-class performer. And yes... she can be a mess.

Just watched the interview, via the link that was posted on this thread. Looks like Liza wasn't expecting Al to talk about it, and she's still very upset at the passing of her dear friend. He probably should have "backed off" a little...perhaps. Either way, it's too bad that the interview was so short, and not longer.

Huh, my initial post seems to have disappeared into the ether.
Moving on.
Liza certainly showed here that she's her father's daughter. Her dad was known for his frequent lack of fluid verbal expression when trying to communicate directorial specifics. It drove some of his actors to the brink.

Posted: 11/25/09 at 7:32pmAl was interviewing Liza. Why was he asking so many stupid "how did you feel" questions about MJ. Who cares? He didn't even mention of the up-coming TV broadcast. I wanted to hear about Liza. Al is the problem here. Liza was too nice.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 2:29pmWhen I watched this interview, I thought it was sweet, even though I felt Liza was a little quiet and withdrawn. Subdued, perhaps, and maybe I wanted to hug her - but I didn't think she was a mess. Then when the interviewer started pushing the Michael Jackson questions and not letting up - well, I thought she was going to break down. And that is a natural reaction and I felt so much empathy for her. I wanted to deck the guy.

Liza, singing "Stormy Weather" in 1970, just after her mother's death and just before Cabaret, before cocaine made her crazy and chipped away at her talent.
This was during the experiment with contemporary arrangements that she made when she was doing the album with the Muscle Shoals arrangements.

How could ANYONE even CLAIM that Liza was a mess when being interviewed by the very DEFINITION of a hot mess: Al Roker.
And I thought it was bad when a infotainment REPORTER was given the CBS Evening News, a JOURNALIST'S job if there ever were any in this day and age, but no, the weatherman-cum-reporter is one step worse somehow. He wasn't even a good weatherman!
Roke' is a JOKE.

DAME,
Thanks...we were also at the Gypsy show and can't wait to see the show on DVD (hope we made it in it as we were in the 2nd row!) We were so impressed how far the show and Liza herself had come since seeing the (basically) same show earlier at Primm when she was not quit up to snuff. The night we saw it at MGM we were absolutely blown away by her and the rest of the company.
As for the interview we saw that as well and were very disappointed Roker decided to press endlessly about MJ instead of allowing her to promote the show which is clearly what she was supposed to be there for.

Neal.. it depends on where you live and who your provider is. Here it is channel 28. or 54 I think. By the way.. if you wishlist her name on your tivo it should come up an you will also notice that they are re running a lot of her other concerts too. ( well.. Radio City and Liza With A Z... I keep hoping New Orleans comes up .. but my copy of it is pretty good).

Thanks for the update. I'm in Glendale, and just checked with Charter Cable, my provider, and they don't get KVCR. I didn't think so, since it didn't sound familiar. Don't have Tivo...
I've all ready pre-ordered it on Amazon. So, I'll watch it when I get it in February.

Posted: 11/28/09 at 12:58amApparently it's on PBS at 8 this Tuesday? At least that's what it says in this week's Entertainment Weekly. But I can't find it on my TV. I tried to preset it on my DVR but according to my TV, something else is on at that time and I can't seem to find it at any other time...

Yes, it says that in "Entertainment Weekly," but I checked my local PBS channel, which is KCET here in LA, and it's not on their schedule.
I'll just have to wait until it comes out on dvd in Feb. No big deal - I've waited this long, a few more months won't be so bad. And, Barbra Streisand's Village Vanguard concert dvd comes out the same day, too - 2/2.

It aired in Boston last night. First ATOTC on Thanksgiving, then Liza on Friday. I'm quite happy!
I thought her energy and passion were amazing. Sure, her voice isn't what it used to be - not even close in terms of being able to sustain notes, or even hit them consistently - but what JOY and sincerity!
The whole program was very smartly put together to mask her flaws and highlight her strengths. Her "boys" did a lot of the heavy lifting without making it look that way. They filled in the blanks vocally by holding the notes she couldn't, and their dancing was more detailed. But she was still the star, no question. What she lacked in technique she made up for with raw force of will.
It was wonderful to see her be so relaxed with herself, too, joking about what she can't do anymore, like kneeling on Mammy! Too funny. And when she took a big breath and cranked up her arm for the big finish on New York, New York, it was like she was bound and determined to give the audience what they wanted and expected. She didn't disappoint. It was thrilling!
Knowing all that she's been through, it's great to see her getting so much pleasure from performing again. I can only imagine what it must have been like seeing her live. The electricity in the air must have been spectacular.

Great review! Can't wait to see it.
Saw "Liza at The Palace" a year ago/December 2008, and it was an extraordinary evening. I was front row Mezz - a perfect seat. Then I saw her in concert in July of this year in Cabazon, CA - right outside Palm Springs. She did all of her hits, no Kay Thompson section and it was amazing! She has such an energy - such a presence the second she walks out onto the stage. She has "it."

I'll read all the reviews of the broadcasts and wonder why LA isn't getting this on PBS.
Right now on Amazon, the dvd is $22. Glad I ordered it earlier and locked in the price of $11.99.

I'm currently watching the second airing of it for the Buffalo/Toronto area, and Liza sounds much better than I thought she would.
My Own Best Friend was fantastic.
