Well, obviously some committee members are stricter than I am.
Sitting in the balcony on opening night last night was kind of funny...I don't think there was one straight man there!
The guy next to me seemed straight. He was there with a woman, and they cuddled during intermission.
But he sang along to every damn song.
I wanted to get a moment alone with his wife to say "Listen, it's a bitter thing mummy has to tell you, but . . . "

Yup, he's one of us...

MissP and Trace, I will be there Friday as well!! Row O in the orchestra ....
Fantastic, philcrosby! I hope you LOVE the show. Maybe we should all try to meet up in front of the theater beforehand for a meet and greet.
You think I really should, Without-A-Trace? Hmmm. Lemme think about this. I trust you guys.
One think I really like about Liza is her sense of humor, especially about herself.
I've heard she LOVES this:
La Pedi does "Liza One-Note"
wow i'm so verde con envidia that you guys got to go to opening nite.

I can't decide if i I care to see this
If any of you reading this thread aren't sure whether or not to see this show, please please go see it. Liza is a living legend who can still belt out songs to the rafters. This show is not only a tribute to her mother, Judy Garland, her godmother, Kay Thompson, but it also includes many of Liza's signature songs that you may never get to hear her sing live again. She is brilliant and I was captivated the entire performance. At 62 years old, Liza has still got it. Seeing her is worth every penny. Absolutely brilliant.
Looking forward to seeing her tomorrow night! YAY!!!
Christine Pedi was there last night. I saw her in the lobby with Harvey Evans.
(Both of whom are big celebrities in my world.)
I'm going, reluctantly...I am not as big a fan as most here, except for her perf. in Cabaret, Sterile Cuckoo and Arthur, I've never actually "gotten" it or her. Her voice has always annoyed me a bit.
That said, I am glad for her and will be sure to enjoy myself. I'm going with a straight guy in our group...cant wait to see his reaction...
Doodle, your take on Liza is pretty much the same as mine: love "Cabaret," love "Arthur," don't own a single recording.
But at some point I think you've got to just acknowledge her status as legend--or, at any rate, as Liza. And one thing you have to say about her is that she's not coasting. The lady works hard.
If anyone is even mildly interested, they should go. She ain't gonna be around forever.
Liza's never been my favorite diva, but now it's obvious i would hate myself for the rest of my life if i don't get up there. is there a rush?
At last, the truth is out! Matthew Murray has a Split Personality!
'Directed and choreographed with gold-lamé slickness by Ron Lewis, this show is perhaps the ultimate tribute to ultimate tributes - so elaborate and unapologetic in framing its subject that it borders on shameless. What is never in sight, however, is dishonesty. Everything is carefully calculated, whether to arouse sympathy or dampen memories of Minnelli’s addictive and injurious past or her last Palace show (Minnelli on Minnelli, in 1999). Yet the show never lets you catch your breath long enough to feel manipulated.
“Nobody has the right to be the judge of what is right for me,” she growls during “What Makes a Man?”, Charles Aznavour’s paean to secure self-identity. It’s her theme statement here, the dramatic anchor for the three vivid - and very different - characters she embodies: Liza Minnelli, her godmother (and vocal goddess) Kay Thompson, and a humble headliner alone in the crowd with her doting public. Each personality is grossly overplayed, glitteringly unconvincing, and impossibly irreplaceable.'

(and it's a Rave.)
The Daily News gives the show 4 Stars out of 5:
'Santa came early this year - with a fabulous present wrapped in shiny sequins and shimmering stardust: Liza Minnelli.
Minnelli's spectacular holiday happening "Liza's at the Palace ..." finds Liza with a Z fit, funny, surprisingly energetic and in her best voice in ages - though on occasion she does mistake volume for tone.'

Another rave.
Bloomberg
AM New York gives the show 2 1/2 Stars out of 4:
'Whether you like her or not, Liza is extremely fascinating to watch. Her combination of fierce vocal belting, giddy personality, and occasional meltdowns defines the allure of show business celebrity.
So let’s cut to the chase. In her new show, is Liza the toast or the train wreck of Broadway? She’s kind of both. At Wednesday’s opening night performance, not only did Act One and Act Two feel like completely different shows, they also displayed different versions of Liza...'

Another rave
AP
The Associated Press is a Rave:
'The woman knows how to a work a room. Even one as big and as historic as the Palace Theatre, that shrine to vaudeville on the corner of Broadway and 47th Street on the edge of Times Square.
Despite years of various ailments, infirmities and assorted marital disappointments, Liza Minnelli has sunny star-wattage to spare, a never-say-die attitude that is astonishing to watch. The evening is called "Liza's at the Palace," and it would be foolish if you don't catch her act before it closes Dec. 28.'

I'm really happy she's getting such good reviews.
That's the first rave from Murray since...what? SPRING AWAKENING...?
Me too. .. When does the Times come out?
That's his first rave, I think, since PASSING STRANGE.
And he hated SPRING AWAKENING. But then, a lot of people do.
