I’ll be in London from July 28-August 7 and I’m trying to figure out what shows I’m going to be seeing. Can anyone give me some advice on what I shouldn’t miss? And also if anyone’s heard whisperings of these coming to NYC, since I would then be okay putting those off till then and fill up my time with shows only to see in London.
Definitely Seeing:
- Guys and Dolls
- Brokeback Mountain
- Patriots
- Crazy for You
- Aspects of Love
- A Strange Loop
- Dr. Semmelweis
Possibly:
- Newsies - closes on July 31st, but wondering if it’s worth it
- Dr. Semmelweis
- Dear England
- Cabaret - I haven’t seen this production, but I’m not a huge Maude Apatow fan and even it doesn’t transfer I’ll probably be in London again to see The Witches, so I may hold off for a casting I’d more enjoy
- The Effect
- La Cage aux Folles - waiting for opinions and who they cast
- The Wizard of Oz
- Evita
Any thoughts?

It might be too far out your way, but if I were visiting the UK this summer I'd want to check out the immersive The Lord of the Rings musical revival at the Watermill.

The only show that I want to go to London for this summer. Quite possibly my favorite play of all time, the Pillowman.

I'll be visiting around the same period too. On my list, aside from the ones you mentioned are:
- The Burnt City (multiple visits, I'm a fan of Sleep No More)
- The Motive and the Cue (Jack Thorne + Sam Mendes + National Theatre looks promising)
- The Pillowman (I like this play a lot, curious about what a female Karurian would bring to the play)
Maybe:
- Ride (Southwark Playhouse, heard good things, but not quite sold by the songs on youtube)
- Tambo & Bones (I missed it in New York, heard it's quite divisive, at least it would be interesting)

Is Motive and The Cue extending or transferring? I thought it closed mid July?

I believe it’s transferring to The Gielgud but no dates have been announced yet. Final performance at The National is July 15

I wish Motive and The Cue would extend through the end of July because I don’t think a transfer will come together that quickly for me to see it. Here’s to hoping!
Ive definitely added Operation Mincemeat and The Pillowman!

I saw “Mincemeat” twice this week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Fortune Theatre is absolutely one of the worst theatre on the West End as far as sight lines go, so be sure to check Seatplan before getting tix.

Mincemeat is an absolute must. They do a Tuesday matinee too so options to fit in an extra show.
Choir of Man is fun and they have Friday matinees.

I saw the Cabaret this week and it was amazing. Aimee Lou Wood from Sex Education is on.
Also saw Mousetrap last night for the first time and loved it. I ended up meeting Carson from Survivor at the show.

Glad you’ve added Mincemeat as that would have been my number one recommendation. Newsies is fun and high energy but it’s a bit of a trek from central London, and the accents are a bit dodgy if you’re American. I’d wait on Cabaret - the experience is fun no matter who they cast and I’m not a Maude Apatow fan either. The Motive and the Cue is great (except for Tupppence Middleton who is miscast as Elizabeth Taylor (although I’m not sure who really could play Elizabeth Taylor adequately)). I’m looking forward to Dear England but honestly who knows how that’s going to go. As for La Cage aux Folles, I would recommend it but OAT has had some terrible misses recently (most recently Once on this Island, which was dire) so I wouldn’t book it in advance. I’d go for the Choir of Man Friday matinee, it’s slight but fun (don’t expect a plot).
