Love Letters play casting#1

I’ve just begun to read the play Love Letters. I know back a number of years ago it was done with a rotating cast. I’m curious who people would like to see in it. And what pairing.  I actually think it’s quite a nice two person play for minimal rehearsal and small budgets. A nice Valentine’s show.  (Yes even if they drift apart )

I’d love to see:

Len Cariou and Fiona Shaw

Catherine OHara and Eugene Levy

Donald Sutherland and Julie Andrews

Maggie Smith and Anthony Hopkins/ Ian McKellan

Or a gender swap: Ian McKellan and Morgan Freeman (but I could listen to those two voices forever)

Seeing how the last production couldn’t even sell out a show with Carol f’n Burnett, I doubt this is on any producers list to attempt again any time soon.

And it's not exactly challenging to perform either. Anyone can get through it.

The possibilities for this show are practically endless. I've only ever seen two productions (Carol Burnett/Brian Dennehy on Broadway in 2014 and the live-streamed Bryan Cranston/Sally Field production in 2020) and enjoyed both; there are days I'm still disappointed Anjelica Houston and Martin Sheen never got to have their turn in the Broadway run. As for potential dreamcast: off the top of my head, Becky Ann and Dylan Baker would be fun to see.

I’m surprised the recent revival didn’t do better than it did. It seemed, on paper, like a smart model: it had star power, extremely low capitalization, and a very low running cost (albeit offset somewhat by the high paychecks of the 2 actors), plus a schedule that encouraged repeat visits for audiences (I was lucky enough to see it with Burnett, and I was seriously considering going back to see Angelica Huston, and possibly others)

It seems like it wouldn’t have to sell like gangbusters to do well, and under the right circumstances it very well COULD have sold like gangbusters.

I guess it was hindered by the poor initial reception and reviews. People seemed to enjoy the show much more once Burnett replaced Mia Farrow, but by then it might have been too late. Was the house too big too, maybe? Maybe a bad marketing campaign?

I’d think one of the biggest challenges of a model like this would be having to constantly be seeking and scheduling starry talent, but that wasn’t even the problem for them, as they closed long before most of the pairs even had a chance to perform.

Years ago I feel I saw what to me was the definitive cast for a one night only benefit at Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT. Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. It was magic evening in the theatre.

I really like the idea of Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy.
